Patent number: 6237292Abstract: A cementitious wall is externally reinforced against out-of-plane or in-plane seismic forces using an overlying layer of composite material, preferably a carbon-fiber/polymer matrix composite material. To externally reinforce the wall against out-of-plane forces, the composite material is applied to the wall as an overlay with the fibers extending vertically. At the base of the wall, the composite overlay is tied to the horizontal building structure using right-angle ties spaced-apart along the foot of the wall. The composite overlay may either be structurally tied to intervening floor structures using right-angle ties, or it may be structurally isolated from the intervening floor structures using flat-tie pass throughs. To externally reinforce the wall against in-plane horizontal forces, the composite material is applied to the wall as an overlay with the fibers running only horizontally.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1999Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: The Regents of the University of California at San DiegoInventors: Gilbert A. Patent number: 6189286Abstract: A concrete-filled fiber-reinforced structural member comprising a concrete core encased in a lightweight fiber-reinforced composite shell formed by winding polymer impregnated high-strength filaments. The fibers are arranged for optimal strength and may be tailored for a specific requirement. The shell structure is durable, chemically inert, and adaptable to a variety of civil engineering applications. A plurality of composite structural members can be connected via connectors to form complex space frame structures such as industrial support structures, bridges, buildings and the like.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1996Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignee: The Regents of the University of California at San DiegoInventors: Frieder Seible, Gilbert A. Patent number: 6107000Abstract: A method for producing micro-elements, such as micro-lenses and computer generated holograms using a gray scale mask formed of a high energy beam sensitive glass plate which may be darkened by direct writing of an electron beam to record a gray scale pattern corresponding to a predetermined depth level to be etched into a photoresist coated substrate. The high energy beam sensitive glass may have a base glass composition which is provided with an ion exchanged surface layer containing a high concentration of silver ions. High energy beam sensitive glass plates are exposed to various electron beam charge densities at relatively low acceleration voltages and over relatively small grid spacings to provide a wide range of gray levels. Photoresist coated substrates are exposed through the gray scale mask and subsequently etched by chemically assisted ion beam milling to produce high efficiency micro-lenses and similar micro-elements having high surface resolution.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1996Date of Patent: August 22, 2000Assignee: Board of Regents - University of California - San DiegoInventors: Sing H. Patent number: 5721118Abstract: The present invention provides a mammalian artificial chromosome (MAC), comprising a centromere and a unique cloning site, said MAC containing less than 0.1% of the DNA present in a normal haploid genome of the mammalian cell from which the centromere was obtained. The invention further provides a MAC, wherein the unique cloning site is a nucleic acid sequence encoding a selectable marker. The invention also provides methods of preparing a MAC. In addition, the invention provides methods of stably expressing a selectable marker in a cell, comprising introducing a MAC containing the selectable marker into the cell. The invention also provides a cell containing a MAC expressing an exogenous nucleic acid sequence and a transgenic mammal expressing a selectable marker.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1996Date of Patent: February 24, 1998Assignee: The Regents of the University of California, San DiegoInventor: Immo E.
