Patent number: 4621591Abstract: A combination collar and muzzle is used as a humane method of restraining, controlling, and achieving obedient behavior of animals, dogs in particular. A collar member or loop encircles the neck immediately behind the ears, and a second loop encircles the upper and lower jaws of the animal to form a type of a figure eight combination collar and muzzle. The two loops are coupled together with a ring behind the jaw. The loops are slidably connected so that when a leash is attached to the portion of the muzzle loop extending out from the connecting ring it will slide easily and at the same time will exert a downward pressure on the neck immediately behind the ears. Pressure is thus simultaneously applied to nerves and muscles tending to control the dog humanely and without choking or applying pressure to the trachea and larynx.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1985Date of Patent: November 11, 1986Assignee: Regents of the University of MinnesotaInventors: Robert K. Anderson, Ruth E. Foster, Jeffrey A. Levine

Patent number: 4619714Abstract: An improved, energy efficient, hot rolling method for direct production of cold formable dual-phase steel is provided. The steel is heated to completely austenitize it and then continuously hot rolled and cooled down into the ferrite-austenite two phase region to a temperature which is just below the effective Ar.sub.3 temperature. The hot rolled steel is then rapidly quenched to provide an alloy containing strong, tough lath martensite (fibers) in a ductile soft ferrite matrix. The method is particularly useful for providing rods in which form the alloy is capable of being drawn into high strength wire or the like in a cold drawing operation without any intermediate annealing or patenting, and has excellent strength, ductility and fatigue characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1984Date of Patent: October 28, 1986Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Gareth Thomas, Jae-Hwan Ahn, Nack-Joon Kim

Patent number: 4618585Abstract: Continuous hybrid cell lines for producing monoclonal antibodies, the antibodies specific for an antigenic determinant unique to cervical cancer cells, have been developed. The hybrid cell lines were established by fusing differentiated lymphoid cells primed with intact human cervical cancer cells with myeloma cells, particularly plasmacytoma cells. The resulting fused hybrid cells were cultured in HAT tissue culture media which included a small concentration of deoxycytidine. Deoxycytidine was found to enhance the growth of the hybrid cells and subsequent yield of monoclonal antibodies secreted therefrom. Hybrid cell lines secreting monoclonal antibodies to antigenic determinants unique for human cervical cancer cells can be maintained indefinitely in culture to produce large amounts of homogenous anti-cervical cancer cell antibody.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1984Date of Patent: October 21, 1986Assignee: Board of Regents, The University of Texas SystemInventor: Teh-sheng Chan

Patent number: 4617265Abstract: A plate of suitable nutrient medium and agar is inoculated with bacteria from a biological sample. Bacterial colonies are cultured on the plate and are then overlaid with a soft agar layer containing bacterial lysing agents. A removable sheet with bound first animal antibodies for cholera toxin is used to contact the overlaid lysed colonies. The sheet is then exposed to a second animal antibody to cholera toxin followed by treatment with a third animal antibody against the second animal antibody, said third animal antibody being coupled to an enzyme capable of generating a chromophoric product. The sheet is then developed by immersion in a substrate and system for the bound enzyme to produce chromophoric products at the sites of enterotoxigenic bacterial colonies.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1984Date of Patent: October 14, 1986Assignee: Board of Regents, University of Texas SystemInventor: Johnny W. Patent number: 4612370Abstract: Functional oxygen transport systems (OTS) have been devised which may serve as temporary blood substitutes in the circulatory system. The OTS comprises pure crystalline hemoglobin dissolved in an aqueous solution and encapsulated within a complex lipid and carbohydrate modified lipid phase. The hemoglobin encapsulated inner aqueous phase and the encapsulating lipid phase are dispensed in an outer isotonic aqueous phase to form a suspension of the multiple water-in-oil-in water emulsion type. The emulsion is suitable to transfusion into the circulatory system to assist in oxygen transport. The carbohydrate modified lipids are included in the lipid phase to "mask" the OTS from the tissue binding and take up by the reticuloendothelial system. The OTS are also suitable for use as calibrating fluids in gas analysis apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1983Date of Patent: September 16, 1986Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventor: C. Patent number: 4608865Abstract: An integrated circuit pyroelectric sensor includes two MOSFETS coupled in a differential amplifier configuration, each MOSFET having a common source. A pyroelectric capacitor is coupled to the gate of a respective one of the MOSFET. A polysilicon filament is disposed between the pyroelectric capacitors which acts as a heating element when a current is passed therethrough. The voltage difference between the drain of each MOSFET is thus a function of the voltage difference between the pyroelectric capacitors. One of the pyroelectric capacitors is disposed at the leading edge of the sensor with respect to the direction of a fluid flow. The fluid flow across the sensor will cause the first capacitor to have a different temperature than the other capacitor of the trailing edge of the sensor whose temperature is a function of the temperature of the heating element.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1984Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Richard S. Muller, Dennis L. Polla
