  • Patent number: 4334970
Abstract: An improved photosensitive resin system being essentially solvent-free which contains an ester produced from an unsaturated organic acid and a polyhydroxyl containing material, a photoinitiator, a carbonyl initiator, and a monomer capable of reacting with an acrylic monomer, wherein an improvement comprises an additional component comprising an unsaturated hydroxyl containing polymer hydrocarbon. The improved composition has curing rates far in excess of those systems not using the hydroxyl containing unsaturated polymer. In particular, the advantages obtained through the use of the additional component are much faster curing of the composition, exceptional gloss, toughness, abrasion resistance and good rub resistance.

  • Patent number: 4237185
Abstract: Cellulose materials such as paper and card stocks are provided in a generally transparent or so-called transparentized form while substantially maintaining the initial strength and stiffness of the pretreated stock. A generally opaque stock is treated with a solventless resin system which is cured by actinic radiation in order to thereby transparentize the stock without subjecting it to lengthy and relatively severe wetting conditions.

  • Patent number: 4230492
Abstract: A stabilizer, applied either as a coating over the sub-base layer of a presensitized planographic plate or blended into the sensitizer layer thereof, prevents degradation of the sensitizer enabling such plates to be stored over prolonged periods of time without loss of image quality or printing performance. The stabilizer is an aryl sulfonic acid or derivative thereof and, preferably, a haloaryl sulfonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof. In a particularly preferred presensitized plate, a p-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid coating is directly applied to a silicated anodized aluminum plate base and forms a separate layer interposed between the silicate sub-base and a water soluble diazo resin sensitizer layer.

  • Patent number: 4225661
Abstract: A photoreactive coating composition, particularly suited for use in a lithographic plate, is characterized by both reduced exposure time requirements and an intense visual image which is immediately produced upon exposure of the composition to light permitting visual inspection during imaging. The photoreactive composition has a diazo resin layer and an overlayer which includes a photochromic compound (e.g. an indolinobenzospiropyran compound) and a light sensitive polymer selected from the group cinnamoylated and acrylated photopolymer resins.

  • Patent number: 4214045
Abstract: A container for a maintenance-free lead-acid storage battery includes a multi-compartment base wherein individual cells of the battery are contained. An overlying cover in vapor-sealed engagement with the base includes a plurality of integrally-molded filler wells which extend from a recess in the top surface of the cover into respective cell compartments of the battery. • Patent number: 4209285
Abstract: A unitary packing especially suitable for use in pumps which transport liquids such as water-based solutions or suspensions includes a generally concave working face having an outer cylindrical annular flange, a generally convex opposed face preshaped for complementary overlying engagement with the working side of a pump piston. The packing, during use, is characterized by substantially reduced stresses and an extended life when compared with conventional packings. The packing may also be structured for occasional axial rotation with respect to the cylinder wall of the pump, which rotation may be enhanced by providing a force-directing element on the concave working face of the packing, this occasional rotation serving to circumferentially reorient the outer cylindrical annular flange of the packing with respect to the inner wall of the pump cylinder to thereby uniformly distribute wear caused by imperfections such as occlusions in the cylinder lining.

  • Patent number: 4207387
Abstract: A container for a remotely-vented lead-acid storage battery includes a multi-compartment base containing individual cells of the battery and an overlying cover in vapor-sealed engagement with the base. A gas collection manifold positioned within a recess in the bottom surface of the cover includes a plurality of interconnected expansion chambers which communicate with respective ones of the battery cell compartments, and a discharge port exterior to the battery container. Battery gas collected within the expansion chambers is conveyed within the manifold to the discharge port, thereby avoiding the need for additional gas collection elements external to the cover and the attendant possibility of leakage of battery gas in the vicinity of the battery.

  • Patent number: 4186247
Abstract: A vented cap for a multiple cell storage battery comprises a base member having a plurality of integrally molded vent plug portions adapted to fit into individual filler walls of the battery and a cover member which snaps in place over the base member to form a chamber for gas egressing from the battery. The base member includes interior walls and a plurality of integrally molded latch members which engage the rim of the cover member to secure the cover member in abutting relationship to the interior walls. The interior walls are dimensioned to space the rim of the cover member from the rim of the base member whereby a continuous vent slot is formed around the periphery of the cap which allows battery gas to escape from the chamber with wide dispersion while inhibiting inward propagation of an externally generated flame.

  • Patent number: 4176104
Abstract: Phonograph record molding compositions having polystyrene as the major constituent are formulated to have wear resistance properties superior to other polystyrene injection molded compositions while generally retaining the transparency of unmodified polystryene. Ethylene-bis-stearamide or a homolog or analog thereof is dissolved within styrene monomer and then the monomer is polymerized to obtain a polystryene matrix having a molecular distribution of ethylene-bis-stearamide or the like within and throughout the matrix. Preferably, the ethylene-bis-stearamide or the like is combined with a wax such as an olefin-based wax or a microcrystalline wax.

  • Patent number: 4168302
Abstract: Cationic surfactants are provided which are useful alone as the active compounds in creme hair rinse and in conjunction with anionic surfactants in other hair conditioning preparations based on anionic-cationic surfactant systems. Such cationic surfactants are non-irritating to the eyes and are compatible with the other conventional ingredients used in hair conditioning preparations. These cationic surfactants are also compatible with anionic surfactants without objectionably reducing or otherwise interfering with the foam normally formed by the anionic surfactants in hair conditioning preparations. Useful cationic surfactants of the present invention have the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein ##STR2## is a fatty acid group containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and n.sub.1, n.sub.2 and n.sub.3 are the same or different integers not exceeding 3. Two cationic surfactants of the invention presently preferred are: isostearylamidopropylmorpholine lactate and stearylamidopropylmorpholine lactate.
