Patent number: 12064789Abstract: A representative sample of a primer and topcoat formulation (as shown in Table 5, for example) were each examined to compare their rheological behavior, with a blend of the topcoat and primer formulation (85% topcoat, 15% primer) used for comparison. The time and temperature dependence of the viscosity was measured on a strain-controlled rheometer using parallel plate geometry in dynamic mode, with an applied strain of 1% and 1 Hz frequency of oscillation. The data is represented as complex viscosity (Pa-s). For the primer and topcoat formulations, sample discs were prepared by compressing 0.3 g of the powder composition in a 13-mm plug mold at 1000 ram force for 15 seconds. Pressing was done at room temperature to avoid premature curing of the powder. The rheometer was set at 70° C. for sample loading. The gap was then set to 0.05 mm below the thickness of the pressed pellet to ensure contact with parallel plates.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2022Date of Patent: August 20, 2024Assignee: The Sherwin-Williams CompanyInventors: Owen H. Patent number: 11866604Abstract: Disclosed is a coating composition that generally includes a waterborne alkyd resin including urethane groups and a crosslinking acrylic latex resin. An alkyd resin and an acrylic latex resin can be included in a composition in relative amounts to yield a cured coating that has a higher pendulum hardness than that of a coating formed from an otherwise identical composition that excludes the acrylic latex resin. The composition can be formulated such that solids of said waterborne urethane alkyd resin and solids of said crosslinking acrylic latex resin are present in a mass ratio ranging from 20:80 to 80:20 with respect to one another A method of preparing a coating composition generally includes blending relative amounts of an alkyd resin and an acrylic latex resin.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2022Date of Patent: January 9, 2024Assignee: THE SHERWIN-WILLIAMS COMPANYInventor: Mark A. Patent number: 11787969Abstract: In general, the embodiments herein provide non-skid, textured protective coating compositions for vehicle surfaces, such as vehicle beds, rocker panels, inner fenders, tailgates, bedrails, cargo vans, step area, and running boards, and other applicable metal, aluminum, fiberglass, plastic, and wood surfaces, and the method for producing same. In particular, embodiments of the present disclosure relate to textured protective coating compositions having improved impact, abrasion, and chemical resistance. These properties are obtained by a combination of an acrylic resin component and a solvent composition, and optionally a rheology additive component, a texturizing component, an adhesion promoter, and a plasticizer.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2021Date of Patent: October 17, 2023Assignee: The Sherwin-Williams CompanyInventor: Julie Manka

Patent number: 11718763Abstract: Water-based stains are based on an oil-in-water emulsion having a binder that includes, consists of, or consists essentially of drying oil combined with a non-aqueous polymer dispersion. The compositions can be tinted using traditional water-based pigment dispersions, yet the overall hydrophobicity results in minimal interaction with the polar cellulosic structure of wood.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2021Date of Patent: August 8, 2023Assignee: The Sherwin-Williams CompanyInventor: Joshua Halstead

Patent number: 11667796Abstract: A coating composition comprises at least one solvent, at least one resin, and at least one filler, wherein the filler is silica-deficient, sodium-potassium alumina silicate. The silica-deficient filler may be a sodium-potassium alumina silicate that contains less than 0.1 percent by weight crystalline silica and is 5 percent by weight or less of the coating composition or 1 percent by weight or less of the coating composition. In the later instance, the coating composition contains less than 0.001 percent crystalline silica. The resin may comprise styrene, styrenic copolymers, or mixtures including styrene. The composition provides a temporary gloss coating that may be removed physically, as by peeling for example. A method for coating a substrate with a coating that maybe removed by physical means is also provided. The method comprises applying the disclosed coating composition.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2021Date of Patent: June 6, 2023Assignee: The Sherwin-Williams CompanyInventor: Rebecca A. Urso
