Abstract: A semiconductor hollow-core waveguide using high-contrast gratings or photonic crystal claddings and a method of manufacturing the same includes providing a layered semiconductor structure; creating an etching mask pattern over the layered semiconductor structure; performing a combined cycled directional etching process on the layered semiconductor structure in one sequence and in one lithography level to create a 3-dimensional waveguide structure; and creating a hollow air core in the layered semiconductor structure by removing to define a shape of the waveguide. The etching process comprises vertically etching a series of deep trenches on the layered semiconductor structure with precise control and varying the width of the trench. Furthermore, the hollow air core is created by removing a portion of the sacrificial material located in the center of the waveguide and under the waveguide.

Abstract: Regulated pneumatic gas is supplied through a gas supply tube (14) which is welded to a pilot valve housing (18) which accommodates a solenoid valve (16). When the solenoid valve is electrically activated and opened, the pneumatic gas flows through a bifurcated channel (22) which is welded to the pilot valve housing and to a fuel valve mechanism (24A) and to an oxidizer valve mechanism (24B). The force of the pneumatic gas causes pistons (38A, 38B) to actuate respective poppets (36A, 36B). Movement of the poppets results in the dispensing of fuel propellant from a fuel outlet chamber (44A) and the dispensing of oxidizer from an oxidizer outlet chamber (44B). The fuel valve mechanism and oxidizer valve mechanism are positioned and oriented such that the exiting fuel and oxidizer are mixed in a vortex rocket engine.

Abstract: A venting cap system includes a first open-ended sleeve and a second open-ended sleeve. The first open-ended sleeve is made from a first material that melts at a selected temperature. The first open-ended sleeve has an internal region commencing at a first end and an externally-threaded region commencing at a second end. The second open-ended sleeve is made from a second material that does not melt at the selected temperature. The second open-ended sleeve is coaxially fitted in the first open-ended sleeve. The second open-ended sleeve includes a first end that is flush with the first end of the first open-ended sleeve. The second open-ended sleeve partially overlaps part of the externally-threaded region. The coefficients of linear expansion of the first material and the second material are about equal.

Abstract: Detection of a breach in security of an enclosure, such as a shipping enclosure, is indicated by detection of a change in a closed status. A detector enclosure is provided with a window opening in the detector enclosure. A reference body having an image slit is accessible from within the detector enclosure, and a radiation detector is used to alternately receive radiation through the window opening in the detector and from the reference body through the image slit. An indication of the two received radiation levels or a difference between the received radiation levels is used to provide an indication of a change in the closed status of the enclosure.

Abstract: A computer based method for estimating surface velocity based on a time series of at least two images of a same portion of the ocean surface by solving a heat equation having unknown parameters of heat source s and surface velocity components u and v. The images can be infrared or thermal images from the AVHRR or other images. Assign a pattern of sub-arrays with number of pixels in each sub-array sufficient to overdetermine the heat equation without the need to apply divergence and vorticity constraints. Define the heat equation for each interior pixel using bilinear interpolation at each interior based on solutions at the corner pixels. Use linear regression to solve for the unknown parameters u, v, and s for each corner pixel by minimizing total error of the heat equation in finite difference form at all pixels, and find the parameters at each remaining point with bilinear interpolation.

Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a method for determining a patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy. The method collects clinical parameters from a plurality of patients to create a training database. A fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model is created using data from the training database; and, the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network is validated. Clinical parameters are collected from an individual patient; and, such clinical parameters are input into the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model via a graphical user interface. The patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy is output from the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model and sent to the graphical user interface for use by a clinician in pre-operative planning. The fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model is updated using the clinical parameters from the individual patient and the patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy.
