  • Patent number: 10550008
Abstract: A low energy fluid purification system and method of implementation including some embodiments having a vacuum-rated first chamber placed in or near a body of water with higher temperature near the surface and lower temperatures at greater depths. The vacuum-rated first chamber holds a quantity of non-potable water and a low pressure area less than or equal to the water's vapor pressure. Vaporization occurs when the higher temperature surface water is brought into contact with the low pressure area. A tubular vapor transport passage allows the vaporized water to pass to a lower temperature and lower pressure condensation chamber. The lower temperature condensation chamber is cooled by lower temperature water from a selected depth below the surface. As the temperature of the vapor lowers, the vapor will condense. This condensation is collected as a quantity of potable water. Additional embodiments and methods are also provided.

  • Patent number: 7623410
Abstract: A method for hard real-time adaptive wave modulation, comprising: populating a case base with waveform pairs, each waveform pair comprising a primary waveform, and a secondary waveform, wherein the primary waveform induces the secondary waveform; synthesizing a known target waveform s(t) by selecting waveform pairs from the case base such that the expression ?s(t)?g?2 is minimized, where g is the secondary waveform; and mutating the primary waveforms for each waveform pair based on a normal distribution until ?s(t)?g??2<?s(t)?g?2 where g? is a new secondary waveform induced by the mutated primary waveform.

  • Patent number: 5815384
Abstract: The present invention provides a transformer which uses bi-directional syronous rectification to transform the voltage of an input signal from one voltage level to another. The invention provides a transformer which requires less core volume, and hence mass, than conventional transformers, and includes a rectifier for transforming a first time varying input signal, such as a sinusoid or saw tooth signal, into a full-wave rectified voltage signal. A synchronous switch control generates first and second control signals in response to sampling the first time varying voltage signal. A floating drive buffer generates third control signals in response to receiving the second control signals. An AC switching stage transforms the full-wave rectified voltage signal into a first and second series of voltage pulses in response to receiving the first control signals. Each of the first and second series of voltage pulses has a pulse period, T, and a pulse width, .omega..

  • Patent number: 5748312
Abstract: A sensing apparatus and related method for sensing strain between fiber Bragg grating sensors inscribed in an optical fiber. The fiber is inscribed with a first fiber Bragg grating sensor and a second fiber Bragg grating sensor. A strain detection unit detects strain between the first fiber Bragg grating sensor and the second fiber Bragg grating sensor based on the optical propagation time of light projected into the fiber and reflected by the first fiber Bragg grating sensor and the optical propagation time of light projected into the fiber and reflected by the second fiber Bragg grating sensor. More specifically, light projected into the fiber is modulated with an RF signal. A phase change of the RF signal is determined from the light projected into the fiber and reflected by the first fiber Bragg grating sensor and from the light projected into the fiber and reflected by the second fiber Bragg grating sensor.

  • Patent number: 5442948
Abstract: The quantity of gases dissolved in liquids is determined by introducing a quid sample into a hollow cylinder with a plunger, retracting the plunger to create a void space into which gases originally dissolved in the liquid sample diffuse, compressing the gases into a reduced volume, measuring the absolute pressure of the gases, and calculating the amount of gases originally dissolved in the liquid from the absolute pressure, the temperature, the vapor pressure of the liquid at the prevailing temperature, the volumes of liquid and the final volume of the gas, by using the ideal gas law.

  • Patent number: 5373773
Abstract: A stern torpedo defense system uses a pair of passive sonar towed tactical etectors in tandem alignment to detect the presence and trajectory of a stern torpedo attack. The detectors are towed below the wake of a surface ship and include arcuate arrays of transducer elements mounted in low self-noise, roll pitch and yaw stabilized platforms. The region aft of the stern of the ship is examined by an overlapping plurality of preformed passive sonar beams of preselected beamwidth. Signal processing means monitor the power level of the beams and detect the presence and trajectory of an attacking torpedo so that suitable ordinance may timely and effectively be deployed to destroy the torpedo and thereby thwart the attack.

  • Patent number: 5235455
Abstract: A differential amplifier for gigahertz bandwidth electrical signals using fiber optics and integrated optical devices has a differential gain which is a function of the electrical to optical and optical to electrical conversion factors. The common mode rejection ratio of the differential amplifier at 1 GHz was greater than 30 dB and the common mode rejection ratio depended on the time difference between the differential amplifier inputs. A differential amplifier fabricated in accordance with this inventive concept could be used as an integrated module in radar and communications systems.

  • Patent number: 5160438
Abstract: A unique bubble production system and method for sampling and cleaning la regions of "dirty" or polluted bodies of water, or for otherwise sampling them for other biological activity. This is achieved by the use of millions to trillions of tiny chemical coated particles which are usually dispersed in air by suitable means to effect predetermined patterns of the particles and resultant bubble region as they descend in the water. The particular character of the particles and their selected dispersal mode assure the homogeneous generation of large concentrations of millions to trillions of bubbles throughout a predetermined volume of the water body so as to generate a planned and controlled bubble spectra for a selected applicational purpose. A bubble spectrum is a plot of the number of bubbles per volume as a function of bubble diameter.

  • Patent number: 5038077
Abstract: A gyroklystron device includes an electron beam source, a plurality of bunching cavities and an output cavity. A first bunching cavity has an input coupling aperture for receiving an rf signal from an rf signal injecting source. Each of the bunching cavities has a first pair of substantially uniform-angle slots of a preselected angle, which are diametrically opposed, and extend axially, parallel to the direction of the electron beam and extend into drift regions on both sides of the cavities. The first pair of slots control the Q of a desired mode and higher order modes. A second and third pair of slots are diametrically opposed and extend axially, parallel to the direction of the first pair of slots, but are rotated 90 degrees circumferentially from the first pair of slots. These slots control the axial profile of any mode that leaks out beyond the desired mode and control the length of field interaction with the electron beam.
