Abstract: Described are shape-memory polymers that have a composite prepolymer crosslinked with a stoichiometric amount of a multifunctional crosslinker, the composite prepolymer having a branched or telechelic prepolymer having a low polydispersity reacted with a non-crystalline chain extender. Also described are methods of making shape-memory polymers by reacting a branched or telechelic prepolymer having a low polydispersity with a non-crystalline chain extender to form a composite prepolymer, and crosslinking a stoichiometric amount of a multifunctional crosslinker with the composite prepolymer, thereby forming the shape-memory polymer.

Abstract: A loudspeaker system composed of a flexible panel with an affixed array of force actuators, a signal processing system, and interface electronic circuits is described. The system described is capable of creating a pattern of standing bending waves at any location on the panel and the instantaneous amplitude, velocity, or acceleration of the standing waves can be controlled by an audio signal to create localized acoustic sources at the selected locations in the plane of the panel.
Abstract: The invention provides novel pharmaceutical compositions and methods for treating newborns in need of enhanced cardiac function, in particular, newborns suffering from cardiomyopathy, or a related disease or condition.
Abstract: Methods and compositions for producing 1-butanol are described herein. In some examples, the methods can comprise, contacting a reactant comprising ethanol with a catalyst system, thereby producing a product comprising 1-butanol. The catalyst system can comprise, for example, an iridium catalyst and a nickel, copper, and/or zinc catalyst. The nickel, copper, and zinc catalysts can comprise nickel, copper, and/or zinc and a sterically bulky ligand.
Abstract: Methods and compositions for depositing a monolayer onto a surface of a substrate are described. The method can include contacting the surface with a vapor phase comprising a carbene source, and reacting a carbene group from the carbene source with a functional group on the surface, to obtain a covalently bound monolayer on the surface of the substrate. The carbene source can be a diazirine compound. The functional group on the surface can be a C—H containing group, a Si—H containing group, among others, or combinations thereof. The method can further involve removing physisorbed molecules from the surface of the substrate.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for separating double-stranded nucleic acids out of a mixture comprising single-stranded nucleic acids and/or dNTPs and/or enzymes. The method uses spatially inhomogeneously functionalized nanoporous materials. For example, the compositions and methods of the present invention can be used to purify DNA amplification reaction products.
Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for removing reverberation from signals. The systems and methods can be applicable to audio signals, for example, to voice, musical instrument sounds, and the like. Signals such as the vowel sounds in speech and the sustained portions of many musical instrument sounds can be composed of a fundamental frequency component and a series of harmonically related overtones. The systems and methods can exploit the intrinsically high degree of mutual correlation among the overtones. When such signals are passed through a reverberant channel, the degree of mutual correlation among the partials can be reduced. An inverse channel filter for the removal of reverberation can be found by employing an adaptive filter technique that maximizes the cross-correlation among signal overtones.

Abstract: There is provided an implantable pressure monitor having a fluid sack in contact with a body part of a patient where the fluid sack is retained to the body part by a pressure monitor housing that may have various attachment means. The fluid sack is filled with a liquid such as silicone oil. The pressure monitor housing has an opening that provides access to a fistula with a fluid valve that terminates through the fluid sack. A fiber optic pressure sensor is in contact with the liquid in the fluid sack by way of the fistula and fluid valve. In some embodiments of the present invention, an electronics module is incorporated with the implantable pressure monitor to provide telemetry, power, and the like.
