Patent number: 4096436Abstract: A power monitor including a high power shunt connected in series with an electrical load to develop a signal proportional to current which is then modulated. A second signal proportional to the voltage across the load is developed by a voltage divider network. The two signals are applied as inputs to an electronic multiplier which produces a modulated output signal which is proportional to the power being dissipated by the load. The ouput signal from the multiplier is fed through an isolation transformer which passes the modulated power signal, but blocks the high load voltage. The power signal is then demodulated, filtered and displayed digitally on a meter. This signal is also provided as an analog output. An oscillator synchronizes both the demodulator and modulator, the oscillator drive of the modulator being isolated.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1977Date of Patent: June 20, 1978Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventors: Kenneth J. Cook, Robert C. Murray

Patent number: 4093392Abstract: An indexable insert milling cutter having multiple round inserts located in staggered individual isolated pockets formed in the annular periphery of the cutter body. Each insert is trapped in its pocket with only a small fraction of the cutting edge projecting beyond the periphery of the body. A chip clearance wall extends outwardly from the cutting face of the insert to the periphery of the body.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1975Date of Patent: June 6, 1978Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: David Alan Hopkins

Patent number: 4066380Abstract: The invention relates to a threading tool for internal threads with a cutter holder which is displaceably mounted on a cutter holder carrier shaft co-axial to the main axis of the rotatable tool which coincides with the thread axis during the cutting process, whereby the said cutter holder shaft is moved forwards and backwards periodically with the forward feed corresponding to the thread pitch in the direction of the main axis in the thread chasing operation by a cam control with a camshaft co-axial to the cutter holder shaft and rotating with a differential speed relative thereto, whereby through a corresponding radial displacement of the cutter holder the cutter is raised during return travel and in the thread chasing operation is set to engage lower and lower from one thread chasing operation to the next up to the final cutting depth.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1976Date of Patent: January 3, 1978Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventors: Hans Werner Beck, Herbert Paul Jager

Patent number: 4040315Abstract: A rotary machining head having a pair of dynamically balanced cross-feed slides with tool blocks mounted thereon for radial cross-feed machining each, provided with a counterweight including a lost motion connection and a stop limiting the counterweight's radially outward movement to provide a partial counterbalancing of the centrifugal force operating on each of the tool blocks resisting radially inward feed. The lost motion connection permits the tool block to continue radial inward movement without counterweight effect, the stop being adjustable to arrest counterweight effect before any weight shift across the center line occurs.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1976Date of Patent: August 9, 1977Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: Robert Aldred Bellingham

Patent number: 4038756Abstract: A sizing gage for use with an LVDT probe for producing an output signal representing the deviation of part dimension from a nominally ideal dimension, and a columnar display means comprising vertically arranged light emitting diodes for indicating the degree and sense; i.e., oversize or undersize, of part size deviation according to which of the emitting diodes is lighted. The probe output is an ac signal of polarity representing the degree of deviation. The probe output signal is converted to a dc voltage the amplitude and polarity of which is representative of part size deviation. The dc signal is used as a comparison base against a precision triangle wave signal to generate a squarewave the transitions of which occur at points in time related to the amplitude and polarity of the dc signal. This squarewave is compared to a reference squarewave of fixed transition time to produce a window pulse the width of which is representative of the degree of part size deviation.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1975Date of Patent: August 2, 1977Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventors: David L. Smith, Norman J. Scherr, Jr.

Patent number: 4000667Abstract: A pair of boring bars are constructed from a single double length straight bar by providing a central bend of suitable angle and curvature to provide a pair of offset supports for a pair of cutting inserts having cutting points projecting to an offset cutting position relative to the periphery of the bar. Cutting out a small segment at the center of the bend provides two boring bars with curved ends. Machining of a chip clearance path and insert pocket on one side or the other of each bar completes a pair of left or a pair of right or opposite hand boring bars.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1975Date of Patent: January 4, 1977Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: David Alan Hopkins

Patent number: 3962952Abstract: Automatically adjustable stop for establishing limit of hydraulically powered axial advance for a milling spindle head with positive means for holding the spindle in fixed advance position during the milling operation along a plane normal to the spindle axis and with automatic gauging means for determining need for adjustment of stop position and gauge responsive means for automatically effecting such adjustment in the stop position while the spindle head is retracted from operating position.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1974Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: George Carl Bour

Patent number: 3946475Abstract: The invention pertains to the field of cutting tools having indexable replaceable cutting inserts and comprises novel means for locating and locking the individual inserts in place with assurance that the inserts are accurately positioned and firmly held with particular advantage in simplicity and economy of construction. The locking means comprise fastening means engaging the tool body and engaging an extended slidable insert bottom seat anvil such that upon actuation the bottom seat anvil is drawn axially, radially and circumferentially relative to the tool body thereby simultaneously drawing the cutting insert retained on the bottom seat anvil into tight engagement with two insert side locating surfaces formed on the tool body and drawing the bottom seat anvil into tight engagement with the tool body.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1975Date of Patent: March 30, 1976Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: David Alan Hopkins

Patent number: 3938231Abstract: A center cutting indexable insert end mill which can be used for axial plunging in solid material or side cutting. The center cutting insert having corner radii is positioned with the axial center line of the tool shank intersecting the inner corner radius. A single square insert with side clearance angle having the cutting face located in a radial plane provides alternate active cutting edges for axial and/or radial feed; alternatively a second diametrically oppositely located identical insert located radially outward of the center cutting insert performs side and outermost axial cutting functions.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1975Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: David Alan Hopkins

Patent number: 3938626Abstract: The vibration damping construction for boring bars comprising a cutter insert holder bar cap rigidly mounted on the end of a boring bar having a rigidly anchored cantilevered internal bar extending back within a cylindrical cavity in the end of the boring bar on which an optional number of heavy reactors are assembled with optionally varied radial clearance for relative oscillatory movement, as well as axial clearance for free independent movement and with outer radial clearance relative to the inner wall of the boring bar exceeding the maximum oscillatory movement whereby reactive oscillatory damping impact transmitted to the cantilevered inner bar will in turn be transmitted to the anchor point of the inner bar and thereby concentrated near the axial location of the cutter insert.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1974Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: The Valeron CorporationInventor: David Alan Hopkins
