Patent number: 6603385Abstract: A protective device for minimizing fire danger in the use of electrical circuits comprises a unit having a mechanically biased conductive element in series with the circuit, and maintained in position under tension by a fusible material such as a Cerro alloy having a yield point at a selected temperature threshold. When overheating at some other point in the circuit results in a rise of temperature at the protective device, the yielding of the fusible material allows the conductive element to spring free, opening the circuit and cutting off the current. This arrangement is useful in a male plug integral to or separate from an extension cord or power cord, in conjunction with circuit breaker systems, in a in-circuit device, and in electrical appliances and devices.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2001Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Safety Thermal Components, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 6145589Abstract: A manifold for heat exchangers with a manifold segment having slots which are perpendicular to the tube axis and spaced in the longitudinal direction and separated by webs, into which hollow flat tubes can be inserted and joined to the contact surface of the respective slot. The webs each have a pair of stampings to strengthen the material on each side of each web and the webs are relatively flat in shape such that the cross-section of the manifold segment has a generally D-shaped profile. At least one baffle is inserted in the manifold segment, centered between a pair of adjacent slots. The baffle has a principle circular edge and a truncated edge so as to have a truncated circular profile substantially corresponding to the approximately D-shaped profile of the manifold segment.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1999Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Thermal Components a division of Insilco CorporationInventor: James D. Gowan

Patent number: 5941303Abstract: A cross-counterflow heat exchanger comprising a pair of identical and identically-oriented, spaced manifolds and a plurality of parallel heat exchanger tubes extending between the manifolds. Each of the manifolds has an interior, longitudinally-extending dividing wall. In a 2n pass heat exchanger, each manifold is symmetric about a mirror plane, the dividing wall is configured to define n+1 upper channels and n lower channels, and the passages of the heat exchanger tubes are divided into 2n flow paths, n being a positive integer. In a 2n+1 pass heat exchanger, each manifold is symmetric about a rotation axis, the dividing wall is configured to define n+1 upper channels and n+1 lower channels, and the passages of th heat exchanger tubes are divided into 2n+1 flow paths, n again being a positive integer.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1997Date of Patent: August 24, 1999Assignee: Thermal ComponentsInventors: James D. Patent number: 5934366Abstract: A manifold for heat exchangers with a manifold segment having slots which are perpendicular to the tube axis and spaced in the longitudinal direction and separated by webs, into which hollow flat tubes can be inserted and joined to the contact surface of the respective slot. The webs each have a pair of stampings to strengthen the material on each side of each web and the webs are relatively flat in shape such that the cross-section of the manifold segment has a generally D-shaped profile. At least one generally D-shaped baffle is inserted in the manifold segment, centered between a pair of adjacend slots. End caps are provided to close the open ends of the manifold, and a bracket can be provided on the manifold to hold it in place. A method of manufacturing the manifolds is also presented.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Thermal ComponentsInventor: James D. Gowan

Patent number: 5152339Abstract: A manifold assembly for use with heat exchangers comprises an extruded unitary tank having a substantially U-shaped cross-section and a unitary stamped header plate which can either be substantially planar or have a substantially U-shaped cross-section. The longitudinal bottom edges of the tank are crimped around the longitudinal side edges of the header plate, and the mating surfaces are brazed substantially along their entire lengths. The inner wall of the tank can include opposed longitudinal ribs having opposed slots therein for receiving baffles for adjusting the flow path within the assembled manifold.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1991Date of Patent: October 6, 1992Assignee: Thermal Components, Inc.Inventor: Gerald C. Calleson

Patent number: 5125454Abstract: A manifold assembly for use with heat exchangers comprises a unitary tank having a semicircular cross-section and a unitary header plate which also has a semi-circular cross-section, the outer diameter of the tank being substantially equal to the inner diameter of the header plate to allow the tank to be inserted into the header plate. A plurality of transverse tube holes are formed through the header plate along its longitudinal center line for receiving the tubes of the condenser or evaporator. A flange or lip is formed around the tube holes to provide both a tube lead-in and a joint filleting pocket. A plurality of opposed transverse slots are formed through the tank and header plate along their longitudinal center lines to receive baffles therein for locking the tank and header plate together during assembly and for adjusting the flow pattern during use. The baffles are configured to engage the inner walls and sides of the slots.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1991Date of Patent: June 30, 1992Assignee: Thermal Components, Inc.Inventors: Harvey Creamer, Donald W. Mathews, Peter M. Watson, Lionel J. LeJeune, III
