Patent number: 5613546Abstract: A casting roll for continuous casting of metals. The roll comprising a core (2) and a sleeve (3), coaxially arranged one with respect to the other. The sleeve is axially coupled to the core by a inward projection (33) on the sleeve which abuts a shoulder (24) on the projection. The projection and the shoulder are located in a plane (P) substantially median with respect to the roll. The sleeve is radially centered on the core by flanges (5) and (6) which are elastically coupled together. The flanges and sleeve have relieved surfaces (37) which allow the sleeve to expand axially without bowing. The invention is particularly well suited for continuous casting thin metallic strips, especially steel strips, between two of these casting rolls.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1994Date of Patent: March 25, 1997Assignees: Usinor-Sacilor Societe Anonyme, Thyssen Stahl AktiengesellschaftInventors: Pierre Delassus, Hugues Legrand, Gerard Raisson, Marc Di Fant, Jacques Barbe, Francois Mazodier

Patent number: 5584335Abstract: A side dam assembly for a continuous casting apparatus for continuously casting thin steel strips between casting rolls. The side dam assembly has a side dam for bearing directly against the rolls of the casting apparatus for preventing leakage of molten metal therebetween. The side dam is attached by a pair of belts to an insulating refractory plate which is carried by a cooled panel. To allow axial motion, one of the belts is not rigidly affixed to either the insulating refractory plate or the side dam. The cooled panel is carried by a thrust plate and is urged toward the rolls by biasing elements which preferably comprise a plurality of pistons urged outwardly from the thrust plate by springs. Preferably, the biasing elements are constructed and arranged so that they are distributed over a zone of shape corresponding to that of the side dam and are capable of exerting on the side dam thrust forces independently of one another.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignees: Usinor-Sacilor, Thyssen Stahl AktiengesellschaftInventors: Jacques Barbe, Luc Vendeville, Pierre Delassus

Patent number: 5479982Abstract: A method for producing a steel strip which has been cast as a stand in a cooled oscillating continuous chill mould, comprises squeezing the strand emerging from the chill mould until it has a first cross-sectional thickness (40-50 mm), followed by hot rolling the strand until it has a second cross-sectional thickness (2-25 mm). Deviations in the normal path of travel of the strand following hot rolling are corrected by adjusting the thickness to which the strand is subjected during the first squeezing step.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1993Date of Patent: January 2, 1996Assignee: Thyssen Stahl AktiengesellschaftInventors: Erich Hoffken, Dieter Kruger, Gisbert Mehring, Gunter Pietzko

Patent number: 5247987Abstract: The side dam comprises a layer in contact with the molten metal constituted by a refractory material of fibrous structure and composed mainly of alumina and silica, and a second layer which is provided behind the first layer and composed of compact refractory material. The fibrous layer ensures the thermal insulation and the compact layer acts as a safety plate. The invention permits the construction of side dams which are capable of both durably ensuring the sealing of the molten metal and preventing untimely solidifications of the metal upon contact with these side dams. The invention is preferably applied to the continuous casting between rolls of hard metals having a high melting temperature, such as iron and its alloys.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1992Date of Patent: September 28, 1993Assignees: Usinor Sacilor, Thyssen Stahl Aktiengesellschaft, Thyssen Edelstahlwerke AGInventors: Herve Tavernier, Christophe Ganser

Patent number: 5201363Abstract: The method comprises effecting the solidification of the metal in a continuous casting ingot mould constituted by two cooled rolls (2) rotating in opposite directions and disposed in confronting relation so as to define a casting space therebetween, continuously extracting from the ingot mould a solidified steel strip (3), and, below the ingot mould, subjecting the strip to a quenching medium (6) so as to cool it sufficiently rapidly to prevent formation of austenite. This medium may be formed by a quenching bath placed in a container (4) disposed under the rolls (2) and having a bottom provided with an opening (5) for the passage of the solidified strip (3). The quenching medium may also be formed by an inert gas in the liquid state blown onto the product by nozzles. The steel strips obtained are easier to shear and coiled at the output end of the casting line owing to the absence of martensite in the ferritic matrix.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1991Date of Patent: April 13, 1993Assignees: Usinor Sacilor, Thyssen Stahl Aktiengesellschaft, Thyssen Edelstahlwerke AGInventors: Philippe Demarez, Jean-Michel Hauser

Patent number: 5193398Abstract: The invention relates to a measuring method to determine elongation after fracture on a tensile testpiece in a computer controlled tensile test. To meet the requirements of the tensile test to DIN EN 10002/1, the measuring grid known from DIN EN 10002/1 is applied to the tensile testpiece. The measuring grid is scanned with a line sensing camera. In the tensile test the elongation of the testpiece is determined when the tensile force has exceeded its maximum and drops to zero. That place for which the computer with the CCD camera detects the greatest distance between adjacent grid lines is utilized to calculate the elongation after fracture to DIN EN 10002/1.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1991Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Assignee: Thyssen Stahl AktiengesellschaftInventors: Jurgen Harder, Gunter Robiller, deceased, Hans-Martin Sonne

Patent number: 4883111Abstract: The mould includes wide side plates 4, 5 and adjustable narrow side plates 2, 3 which can be clamped by the wide side plates 4, 5. Adjusting cylinders 11 operable by a hydraulic pressure medium are used to adjust and tension the wide side plate 5. To prevent the tensioning from becoming accidentally loosened if the pressure medium fails, the wide side plate 5 is additionally supported, more particularly on clamping elements 12 which can be clamped to the piston rods 13 of the adjusting cylinders 11. A control device 21 activates the clamping elements 12 when a limit pressure is reached at the adjusting cylinders 11.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1988Date of Patent: November 28, 1989Assignee: Thyssen Stahl AktiengesellschaftInventors: Hermann Lax, Waldemar Radtke, Karl-Heinz Wyrwas
