    Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for inspecting the side walls of transparent bottles for the detection of dirt or foreign bodies therein. The inspection is effected by projecting a plurality of images of the side walls of a bottle, as viewed from at least two different directions in plan, on to at least one integrated circuit device comprising an array of photodiodes arranged in a plurality of rows in combination with means to interrogate each diode in turn, along each row in turn, to provide a video signal comprising a sequence of electrical signals corresponding to the light energy each diode has received. The two optical paths are so folded that over part of their lengths they are parallel and vertical, thus enabling both path lengths to be varied simultaneously by a common adjustment means, thereby to shorten or lengthen the object distance to obtain the appropriate magnification over a range of bottle sizes and make full use of the potential resolution of the photodiode array.

The inspection is effected by projecting a plurality of images of the side walls of a bottle, as viewed from at least two different directions in plan, on to at least one integrated circuit device comprising an array of photodiodes arranged in a plurality of rows in combination with means to interrogate each diode in turn, along each row in turn, to provide a video signal comprising a sequence of electrical signals corresponding to the light energy each diode has received. The video signal is differentiated and unwanted signals outside of the limits of the side walls to be inspected are gated out, whereby to generate a video output pulse representative of dirt in the bottle.

    Abstract: Containers having their bodies made from laminate material, such as paper board/plastic foil/metal foil laminates, readily tend to distort and this results in unreliable application of metal foil closure caps used to seal the mouths of the containers. The present invention provides apparatus for successively advancing cylindrical containers of this type beneath a cap-applying device and for restoring distorted containers to their true circular cross-sectional to enable correct application of the caps to the container mouths. The apparatus comprises two star wheels, having equal pitch circle diameters, which are mounted side-by-side with their axes of rotation parallel and spaced apart by a distance less than the common pitch circle diameter of the two wheels. The latter have equal numbers of part-circular recesses in their peripheries for engaging containers.

    Abstract: The invention relates to bottle feeding apparatus in which bottles in an upright position are moved continuously in a stream along a path, means being provided for deflecting the mouth of a bottle transversely of the direction of its forward movement to tilt the axis of the bottle, the neck of a deflected bottle being engaged by a plough positioned adjacent to and downstream of the deflecting means and shaped progressively to displace the body of the bottle sideways out of the stream of moving bottles. As a deflected bottle is moved sideways out of the stream it is guided by the plough into a deflection channel and its axis is restored to an upright position by its neck engaging with a rail at the opposite side of the deflection channel and by the squeezing action of adjacent bottles.
