Patent number: 6784831Abstract: An improved GPS signal receiver (and corresponding method of operation) includes a plurality of antenna elements each receiving a plurality of GPS signals (e.g., GPS LI signals or GPS L2 signals). A plurality of mixers (which correspond to the array of antenna elements) and a combining node convert the GPS signals received at the antenna elements in a frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) manner over FDM frequency bands logically assigned to the antenna elements to produce a composite signal representing such GPS signals. An analog-to-digital converter converts an analog signal derived from the composite signal (which may be an intermediate frequency signal or a baseband signal) into a digital word stream. Demultiplexing logic extracts GPS signal components in the digital word stream. The GPS signal components correspond to the FDM frequency bands logically assigned to the antenna elements.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2003Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: TIA Mobile, Inc.Inventors: James June-Ming Wang, Chau-Chin Yang, Wen Yen Lin

Publication number: 20040087294Abstract: An improved receiving phased array communication system supplies oscillating waveform signals with different phase delays to downconverting mixers in the processing channels of the receiving phased array communication system to compensate for phase difference in the received signal over the antenna elements therein. Similarly, an improved transmitting phased array communication system supplies oscillating waveform signals with different phase delays to the upconverting mixers in the processing channels of the transmitting phased array communication system to introduce phase difference in the transmit signal for transmission over the antenna elements therein. The oscillating waveform signals with different phase delays are preferably derived from a local oscillator that generates a local oscillating signal, and a delay line network having a plurality of fixed delay lines arranged in a serial manner to introduce increasing fixed phase delays in the local oscillating signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2002Publication date: May 6, 2004Applicant: TIA Mobile, Inc.Inventor: James June-Ming Wang

Publication number: 20040085933Abstract: An improved satellite receiver includes a phased array antenna subsystem with a local oscillator that produces a local oscillating signal and delay means that introduces different phased delays to the local oscillating signal to produce a plurality of oscillating waveform signals with different phase delays. These oscillating waveform signals are supplied to downconverting mixers in the processing channels of the phased array antenna subsystem. A controller electronically adjusts an elevation angle pointing direction of the satellite receiver by varying frequency of the local oscillating signal produced by the local oscillator.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2002Publication date: May 6, 2004Applicant: TIA Mobile, Inc.Inventor: James June-Ming Wang

Patent number: 6657589Abstract: A low profile, vehicle mounted, in-motion tracking, satellite antenna includes a pair of antenna assemblies mounted in parallel on a rotatable platform. Each antenna assembly includes two subreflectors with a plastic matching element. The outputs of the two antenna assemblies are coupled with a single phase shifter. The combined outputs are retransmitted to a receiver inside the vehicle. The satellite antenna also includes a receiver for receiving channel selection data and/or for providing two-way communication with equipment inside the vehicle. The antennae, transmitter and receiver are self-powered by a storage device which is charged by a wind driven generator. A retractable radome lowers to a lower profile when the antenna is not in use.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2001Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignee: TIA, Mobile Inc.Inventors: James June-Ming Wang, Paul K. Sun, Russell Geoffrey Santora
