Abstract: An elevator car positioning system includes a plurality of magnetic field producers, each of the plurality of magnetic field producers located in a position corresponding to an entry/exit point of an elevator. A giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor is disposed on an elevator car of the elevator to detect individual ones of the plurality of magnetic field producers when within a given detection range of the GMR sensor and generate detection signals indicative thereof. A controller is in communication with the GMR sensor and is configured to receive the detection signals from the GMR sensor, determine a position of the elevator car relative to the entry/exit point based on the received detection signals, and generate control signals to position the elevator car.
Abstract: A travel blocking apparatus for blocking the movement of a car movably disposed in a hoistway. The travel blocking apparatus includes a flapper mechanism attached to the car and configured, when deployed, to extend an arm outside of an outer side periphery of the car and a prop device disposed in the hoistway and configured to contact the arm when said arm is extended so as to stop the car from moving downwardly in the hoistway.

Abstract: A stabilizing system may be utilized to reduce or eliminate sway of magnetic tape that is suspended in an elevator hoistway and provides a positional reference to an elevator cab. The stabilizing system may include a stabilizing mechanism fixed within a hoistway and a roller cam disposed on the elevator cab. The stabilizing system may include a telescoping member attached to a guide having opposing flanges that restrict movement of the tape. The telescoping member and the guide may be biased in an extended position, where the guide partially surrounds the tape. In a retracted position, the guide is horizontally spaced apart from the tape. When the elevator cab passes the stabilizing mechanism, the roller cam may force the guide and the telescoping member into the retracted position to prevent any contact between the stabilizing mechanism and components disposed on the elevator cab.
Abstract: A hydraulic elevator may comprise a bidirectional pump that controls up and down motion of an elevator car. A VVVF drive may cause the bidirectional pump to provide working fluid in a controlled manner to a hydraulic jack that supports the elevator car. A control valve may be disposed between the bidirectional pump and the hydraulic jack so that the control valve can be closed when the elevator car needs to be held in place. To avoid pressure waves that propagate when the control valve is opened with disparate pressures on the pump and jack sides of the control valve, the bidirectional pump may adjust the pressure on the pump side of the closed control valve to the pressure on the jack side of the control valve before the control valve is opened.
