Patent number: 6634606Abstract: A hanger for attaching pipe used in fire protection sprinkler systems to structural framing members. The hanger is substantially horseshoe shaped, the pipe being held in the arched section of the hanger by snapping it between protrusions formed on either side of the arch. A support web positioned in slots in the hanger legs restrains movement of the pipe in the event of a strong surge caused by a sudden release of water pressure.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2000Date of Patent: October 21, 2003Assignee: Tolco IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 6098942Abstract: The invention relates to a clamp for firmly connecting to a bar joist flange and other flanged structures, and a method for manufacturing the clamp. The clamp includes one or more yokes and a locking bar that is captured within the yoke(s) by a pair of set screws which also engage the flange. The side walls of the yoke(s) include aligned slots for receiving the flange and aligned openings for receiving the locking bar. In one form, the clamp includes one yoke with openings through an end wall for the set screws. In another form, the yoke side members are U-shaped and the set screws extend between the inner and outer side walls of each side member. In yet another form, the set screws extend between the side walls of an inner yoke and the side walls of an outer yoke of the clamp. The clamp of the invention can be used for bracing pipes and other loads, suspended below ceilings and floors, against sway and seismic disturbances.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Tolco IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 5947424Abstract: A beam clamp retaining strap has a beveled locking slot for securing to a threaded hanger rod or set screw of a pipe support assembly mounted to an I-beam. The assembly further comprises a C-type clamp, and the strap may be positioned in any of four possible locations with respect to the clamp, rod, and set screw. The slot edges securely engage between the major and minor thread diameters of the rod or screw. The beveled locking slot provides additional assurance that the clamp grip does not loosen such that the pipe assembly is dislodged, and, thus, the need for an additional nut for the retaining strap is thereby eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1995Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Tolco, IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 5702077Abstract: A mounting member for a ceiling or beam utilizes a barrel nut for connection with a hanger rod of a pipe hanging support. A technique of creating an offset portion about the barrel nut and then deforming that portion to provide secure fixation of the nut in the member to prevent rotation of the nut when the hanger rod is turned.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1995Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Assignee: Tolco, IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 5344108Abstract: A pipe surge restrainer between a pipe hanger and a liquid carrying pipe resists upward surging movement of the pipe when the liquid pressure changes. One form of the restrainer is initially a flat strap having two legs, two transverse arms spaced from the legs but connected to the legs at one end by bridges, and a connecting wall remote from the arms and located between the two legs. The strap is bent into a generally U-shape with the legs and arms extending vertically upright and parallel and linked by the integral wall. The arms are bent into opposing rod receiving shapes and the bridges are bent toward each other to bring the arms closer together to form a clip. The restrainer legs are positioned within the space between the pipe and a yoke of the hanger with the clip engaging the hanging rod or swivel nut above the yoke, the connecting wall near the pipe, and the upper edge of the legs directly adjacent the yoke, thereby providing a spacer which retains the pipe in position.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1992Date of Patent: September 6, 1994Assignee: Tolco, IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 5149040Abstract: A side beam pipe hanging bracket for principal use in fire sprinkler systems. In the first step of forming the bracket, a generally rectangular shape having an inverted-T-shaped slot, is cut from the metal strip, thereby defining a bolt receiving segment and two hanging segments, one to each side of the bolt receiving segment. The flat bracket is then stamped with threads along the bolt receiving segment, thereby causing the bolt receiving segment to curve and the hanging segments to move laterally toward one another. The hanging segments are then forced further laterally until they overlap one another and holes in each segment are aligned. This motion causes the bolt receiving segment to bend further into a channel with threads around its inner circumference capable of accepting a threaded pipe hanging rod. The bracket is mounted on the vertical surface of a horizontal support by extending a fastener through the overlapped holes in each hanging segment.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1991Date of Patent: September 22, 1992Assignee: Tolco, IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 4570885Abstract: A pipe hanger clamp, formed by bending a flat section of metal bar or plate, has two vertical side members which have been cut so their side view is a "C" shape. The lower arms of these two side members are joined by a horizontally extending end wall about which the side members are bent. Threaded holes in the end wall receive a mounting set screw and a pipe hanger rod for supporting a pipe. An overhead support is clamped between the set screw and the upper arms of the C-shaped side members, such that the load applied to the rod is generally edgewise to the plate thickness, and does not provide an unbending force on the clamp.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1983Date of Patent: February 18, 1986Assignee: Tolco, IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 4487387Abstract: The ring nut is a composite of a tubular element made of plastic having an outwardly extending flange on one end with a steel nut embedded in the flange. The tubular element extends through holes in a pipe hanger strap and is strong enough to handle the torque of rotating the element, but it need not be strong enough to support the pipe load in that the steel nut supports this load.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1982Date of Patent: December 11, 1984Assignee: Tolco IncorporatedInventor: Richard W. Patent number: 4461440Abstract: A pipe hanger strap assembly is formed having two overlapping segments with coaxial holes to accommodate the passage of a composite hanger ring nut and a pipe hanger rod. The ring nut is a composite of a tubular plastic element having a radially extending flange on one end with a metal nut embedded in the flange. A flange on one end of the overlapping segment of the pipe hanger assembly is spring-loaded against the ring nut flange by virtue of the spring constant of the formed pipe hanger assembly. This spring loaded flange contact inhibits unintentional loosening of the composite ring nut and, in the event that the plastic ring nut flange disintegrates, the flange on the overlapping segment contacts the metal nut to prevent inadvertent loosening of that nut.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1983Date of Patent: July 24, 1984Assignee: Tolco IncorporatedInventor: Richard W.
