Patent number: 6950177Abstract: Technology is disclosed for measuring distances. A measurement device emits a beam that reflects on the surface of an object. The measurement device determines the distance to the object, based on the time of flight of the beam from transmission to capture by the measurement device. The measurement device derives feedback reference pulses from pulses in the emitted beam and injects them into the device's receive path—creating a receive waveform that includes one or more feedback reference pulses and corresponding pulses in the return beam. The device uses the pulses in the waveform to measure time of flight. The measurement device can attenuate the feedback reference pulses to intensities similar or equal to the intensities of the return pulses. The measurement device can include a histogram processor that collects waveform samples at varying comparison thresholds.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2003Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventors: Robert Lewis, Chad Thompson, George Varian

Patent number: 6878954Abstract: A tool is employed in conjunction with alignment, depth, and level detectors. The tool can use all or some of these detectors. The alignment detector provides an orthogonal laser line grid on an incident surface when the detector has a predefined relationship with the surface. The depth detector emits two sets of parallel laser planes that converge with each other. When the laser planes impact on an incident surface two sets of lines are formed. The laser lines from one laser plane set move closer to the lines from the other laser plane set as the depth detector moves closer to the surface—showing changes in depth or distance. The level detector employs two converging laser planes. An operator positions the level detector above an incident surface, so the laser planes' line of intersection appears on the surface if the surface is level. If the surface is not level, lines separate from each laser plane appear on the surface—signaling the need for a level adjustment.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventors: Andrew G. Patent number: 6848188Abstract: A laser alignment device provides horizontal and vertical reference planes, lines, and points. The alignment device includes a pendulum assembly that supports a laser beam source assembly, two reflectors, and two motors. The laser beam source directs beams onto the reflectors—producing a horizontal reference beam and a vertical reference beam. Each reflector is rotated by one of the motors. Continuous rotation generates a reference plane; dithering generates a reference line, and no movement results in a reference point. The pendulum assembly includes a coarse pendulum that supports a fine pendulum, as well as the rotating motors and beam reflectors. The coarse pendulum roughly levels the alignment device. The fine pendulum supports the laser beam source assembly and brings the alignment device to a level position. The laser alignment device also includes a motor control system that enables users to accurately position the device's references.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2001Date of Patent: February 1, 2005Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventors: Christopher A. Patent number: 6804892Abstract: An alignment device provides one or more references, such as laser lines and planes in horizontal and vertical orientations. One version of the alignment device includes an optics mounting assembly situated in a pivot socket on a frame to provide an output beam. Multiple spring systems and one or more alignment assemblies align and secure the optics mounting assembly in the socket. As a result, the output beam has a desired orientation with respect to true level. A first spring system directs the optics mounting assembly through the pivot socket. A second spring system holds the optics mounting assembly in communication with the alignment assemblies to reduce system backlash. One implementation of the pivot socket has a surface in the form of a sphere's interior surface. A set of support members on the optics mounting assembly rest on the pivot socket's spherical surface—causing the output reference beam to extend from the center of a sphere including the socket's spherical surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2003Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: Toolz, LtdInventors: Bill Wai Lam Yung, Jonathan Wing Cheung Lam, Weng Chia Tang

Patent number: 6657788Abstract: A multi-beam tool is disclosed which can perform square, plumb, and level function which may be required in a construction environment. The tool can generate in a preferred embodiment up to five orthogonal beams with two beams being plumb and three beams being leveled. Combinations of two level beams, or a level and a plumb beam in orthogonal arrangement can produce a square alignment set of beams. The tool includes in a preferred arrangement a self-leveling pendulum to which a laser and quad-mirror arrangement is secured. The self-leveling pendulum is dampened in order to allow the tool to settle down and provide alignment after the tool is positioned as desired.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2003Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventors: Christopher A. Tacklind, William F. Carlsen, Jr., Eugene F. Duval, Andrew G. Butler, Thomas Zimmerman

Patent number: 6625895Abstract: A method and apparatus for leveling at least one output light beam in a construction tool. One embodiment of the apparatus includes a laser optical assembly for producing output light beams that define plumb, level, and right angle beams for use in construction applications. The optical assembly is mounted on an optical platform which permits tilting about “slip-stick” joints that define two perpendicular axes of rotation. Such joints allow the optical platform to change its angle of tilt in response to an applied torque and to maintain the changed angle of tilt until further torque is applied. Also, the “slip-stick” mechanism prevents substantial movement or oscillation of the optical platform in the absence of the applied torque. The embodiment further includes a sensor element for determining whether the output beams are level.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2001Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventors: Christopher A. Patent number: 6591510Abstract: An apparatus and method for securing and aligning level indicators such as bubble vials includes the use of a spring structure with a screw adjuster. In some embodiments, multiple spring structures are positioned perpendicular to one another to allow precise adjustment in different planes. The spring structure is economical to manufacture, and allows accurate adjustment of levels placed in equipment having imprecisely bored holes.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Toolz, Ltd.Inventor: Christopher Andrew Tacklind
