Abstract: A surgical instrument including at least one tibial phantom generally corresponding to at least certain features of the tibial implant. The tibial phantom includes a top surface adapted to move freely against the prepared bottom end of the tibia. At least one talus phantom generally corresponding to at least certain features of the talus implant is engaged with the prepared top surface of the talus. At least one phantom skid is located between the tibial phantom and the talus phantom. The phantom skid is engaged with the tibial phantom such that dynamic engagement between the phantom skid and the talus phantom through at least extension and flexion of the ankle joint positions the tibial phantom on the prepared bottom end of the tibia. The phantom skid can either be a part of the tibial phantom or a separate component.

  • Patent number: 8118875
Abstract: An orthopedic device for ball and socket joint reconstruction. The anchor stem is adapted to be anchored in a medullary canal. A proximal portion of the anchor stem includes a threaded hole oriented along a longitudinal axis thereof. Metaphyseal portion includes a proximal end with recess and a longitudinal bore in fluid communication with the recess, and a distal end adapted to interface with the proximal portion of the anchor stem. An anti-rotation structure is preferably located at an interface of the anchoring stem to the metaphyseal portion to prevent rotation of the anchor stem relative to the metaphyseal portion around the longitudinal axis. A fastener is provided to extend through the longitudinal bore and to engage with the threaded hole on the anchor stem to fix the metaphyseal portion to the anchoring stem. The locking assembly is located in the recess and mechanically couples the head of the fastener to the metaphyseal portion to limit rotation of the fastener relative to the metaphyseal portion.

  • Patent number: 8080063
Abstract: A glenoid component for a shoulder prosthesis adapted to be mounted in a glenoid cavity of a shoulder. An elongated keel adapted to engage with the glenoid cavity is attached to the internal surface of the base. The keel extends along a longitudinal axis of the base. The keel includes various configurations of transverse members extending away from the longitudinal axis. The surgeon selects a glenoid component with a keel and transverse member configuration that is anatomically optimized for the patient. Glenoid components properly optimized provide mechanical strength and stability superior to prior art devices. The glenoid components disclosed herein are particularly well suited for use in an anatomical total shoulder prosthesis, but may are also suited to partial shoulder prostheses and reverse shoulder prostheses.

  • Patent number: 8002839
Abstract: This surgical apparatus comprises, on the one hand, means for spatial marking-out of the patella and femur of a patient to be operated on, and, on the other hand, means for simultaneous and relative representation of this patella provided virtually with a patellar implant of the prosthesis, and of this femur provided virtually with a femoral implant of the prosthesis, in a transverse plane passing both through the patella and through the trochlea of the aforementioned femoral implant. Using this apparatus, the surgeon can easily and quickly check the congruent position of the patellar implant with respect to the prosthetic femoral trochlea in order to reduce the risks of subsequent dislocations of the patella fitted with the prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 7993346
Abstract: A method for implanting a malleolar implant in an ankle joint. A spacer block is positioned between a lower portion of a tibia and an upper portion of an astragalus in the ankle joint. A guide attached to the spacer block is positioned opposite an outer surface of a fibular malleolus. A bore aligned with the guide is formed through the fibular malleolus. The spacer block is removed from between the tibia and the astragalus. A shank of the malleolar implant is engaged with the bore from an inner surface of the fibular malleolus. The shank is advanced into the bore so an inner surface of a head of the malleolar implant engages the inner surface of the fibular malleolus.

  • Patent number: 7942882
Abstract: An ancillary tool for fitting a humeral component of a total or partial elbow prosthesis, comprising a guiding tool (30) for boring a humeral trochlea (T) along a geometric axis (X-X?) of bend of a joint to be equipped with said prosthesis. The guiding tool (30) includes a stirrup element (31) and means (32b, 33b) for securing said stirrup element on the humeral trochlea (T) so that said guiding tool defines a guiding zone that is aligned in the geometric axis of bend for the introduction (F1) of a drill (40), a punch or the like, in the humeral trochlea (T) along said geometric axis of bend. This ancillary tool also comprises at least one stepped template (701, 702, 703) for determining an anterior offset of said geometric axis of bend (X-X?) with respect to a humeral diaphyseal axis (Y-Y?).

  • Patent number: 7927338
Abstract: The surgical device according to the invention comprises both means for per-operative measurement and for memorization of a plurality of positions of a given femoral prosthetic direction and means for per-operative comparison of these positions with the cone of mobility of the prosthesis to be implanted, the position of the axis of revolution of this cone being, during the implantation of the prosthesis, adjustable with respect to the zone of the pelvis where the implantation of an acetabulum of the prosthesis is provided. By using this device, the surgeon can easily and rapidly determine, in the course of the surgical operation, a preferential direction for implanting the prosthetic acetabulum in order to reduce the subsequent risks of dislocations of the implanted prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 7678150
Abstract: A total shoulder prosthesis includes a glenoidal component a substantially hemispherical convex articular surface and of which a center of curvature is adapted, when the prosthesis is implanted, to be located in the glenoid cavity or in the immediate vicinity thereof, and a humeral component defining a concave articular surface adapted to cooperate with the convex articular surface of the glenoidal component. • Publication number: 20090287309
Abstract: A method for implanting an intra-articular shoulder prosthesis is provided. The method includes removing a proximal portion of a humerus. The proximal portion of the humerus preferably forms a resected portion. The resected portion has a convex outer surface and an inner surface. The method further includes engaging the convex outer surface of the resected portion with a cut surface of the proximal portion of the humerus. The cut surface of the proximal portion of the humerus and/or the inner surface of the resected portion are optionally processed to form a generally concave surface, such as by impacting. In one embodiment, the inner surface of the resected portion is impacted into engagement with the cut surface of the proximal portion of the humerus. The generally concave inner surface of the resected portion forms a concave articular surface to receive an interpositional implant.

  • Patent number: 7608075
Abstract: A humeral nail includes an elongated body, a plurality of interlocking devices and a locking device. The elongated body is at least partially insertable into a medullary canal of a humerus and has a proximal part with a plurality of orifices. The interlocking devices are insertable into the orifices to interlock initially split humeral fragments. The locking device is capable of locking the interlocking devices within the orifices. The locking device is free to move relative to the body between a free passage position in which the locking device enables free passage of the interlocking devices through the orifices, and a locking position in which the locking device locks the interlocking devices in position with respect to the orifices.
