Patent number: 6419293Abstract: A torsion bar for use in raising a vehicle trunk lid has a center extender portion to increase the effective length of the torsion bar. The extender portion generally includes three U-shaped portions of the torsion bar which extend on a generally horizontal plane. Two of the U-shaped portions extend transversely across the vehicle. The third extends longitudinally. A pair of lifting portions extend radially at either end of the torsion bar. The lifting portions engage a link pivotally attached to hinge arms to form a biasing force to lift the trunk lid. The increased effective length of the torsion bar permits the torsion bar to produce desired lifting criteria while preventing the torsion bar from being overstressed.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2001Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Toyota Technical Center USA, Inc.Inventors: Nicole Nicholas, Anita Arora

Patent number: 6240910Abstract: A compressed natural gas-fueled automotive vehicle is disclosed in which the fail-safe control operation is performed thereby to secure the safety of the vehicle when the gas pressure drops. If the remaining amount of the gas is very small, an engine misfire occurs. If the catalyst temperature is high, the uncombusted gas begins to burn on contact with the high-temperature catalyst in the catalyst unit. In view of this, upon detection of both a gas pressure drop and the vehicle moving condition or upon detection of both a gas pressure drop and an increased catalyst temperature, the fuel supply is stopped or the vehicle speed is reduced to thereby reduce the catalyst temperature. As a result, uncombusted gas is not burnt in the catalyst unit and the catalyst unit is prevented from being destroyed.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2000Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignees: Fujitsu Ten Limited, Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki, Toyota Technical CenterInventors: Masahiro Maekawa, Kohei Igarashi, Hiroki Matsuoka, John Stephen Viggers

Patent number: 6213498Abstract: An air bag deployment apparatus for a seat back includes a support bracket and deployment strap. The support bracket has a reaction surface which extends behind the air bag inflator. The deployment strap is sewn to the inside of a seam line, a trim cover, and extends from the front of the seat along the side to an aperture formed in a foam cushion. The strap passes through the cushion to the reaction surface of the support bracket. The support bracket may be formed with panels which parallel the alignment of the strap. The strap is supported without slack to reduce the gas force necessary for stable deployment of the air bag.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignees: Toyota Technical Center USA, Inc., Toyota Motor CorporationInventors: Haleh Ghalambor, Satoshi Mikutsu, Takeaki Kato, Koichi Suzuki

Patent number: 5857633Abstract: A cup holder for holding receptacles such as cans, bottles and the like includes a housing and a pair of receptacle holding rings rotatably mounted on the housing for movement in different planes between a retracted position in which the holding rings are located in the interior of the housing and an extended position in which the holding rings extend out of the housing. A closure element is also provided for closing the open front of the housing when the receptacle holding rings are in the retracted position. The receptacle holding rings are provided with engaging elements that engage one another when the receptacle holding rings are in the extended position. The engaging elements define a predefined stop position for the two rings in the extended position. Additionally, tabs are provided on one of the rings to prevent the rings from crossing over one another.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1997Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignee: Toyota Technical Center U.S.A., Inc.Inventors: Michael E.
