  • Patent number: 10826357
Abstract: Disclosed are an electric motor and a simplified variable speed drive system which renders the use of filtering components in a motor drive circuit unnecessary and increases torque transfer from permanent magnets of the rotor to the output shaft. The motor includes a fluid gap between the rotor and the stator configured to receive a cooling fluid, such a refrigerant. A plurality of radially-abutting, bread loaf-shaped magnets having a flat base are respectively fixed to a plurality of longitudinally oriented mounting facets provided on the shaft to provide maximum torque transfer from the magnets to the shaft. An eddy shield disposed between the faceted shaft and the magnets thermally shunts high frequency harmonics from the magnets to the shaft and cooling fluid. The rotor components are mechanically secured by a sleeve disposed around the rotor.

  • Patent number: 10794607
Abstract: Configuration of flow paths for the output (e.g., chilled or heated air) of an HVAC system is described. In one embodiment, a demand response message can be received from a resource provider requesting that the HVAC system increase or decrease consumption of the resource. If the request is satisfied, then the output from the HVAC device will be increased or decreased resulting in potential discomfort for occupants. This output, however, rather than being distributed in a uniform manner, can instead be distributed, via ventilation elements of the HVAC system in a non-uniform way according to the flow paths. The flow paths can be determined to direct sufficient output to high priority zones in order to, e.g., satisfy a comfort level in the high priority zones.

  • Patent number: 10767908
Abstract: A cascade heat recovery system connects an evaporator from a heating unit to a recovery condenser of the cooling unit, where the recovery condenser is different from a cooling condenser of the cooling unit, and/or connects the evaporator of the heating unit to the cooling loop of the cooling unit, for example in fluid communication with the evaporator of the cooling unit. Both configurations allow the heating unit to be isolated or decoupled from the heat rejection circuit on which the cooling condenser runs. The use of either or both configurations, depending on the operating conditions, can use heat rejected by the evaporator of the cooling unit to be available to the heating unit, so as to provide lift to the heating unit and improve its operating efficiency.

  • Patent number: 10772097
Abstract: Configuration of a communication module based on determination of an idle time metric is described. In one embodiment, signal strength data representative of composite signal strength indicators of a group of frequency channels utilized by the communication module is determined. A composite indicator of the composite signal strength indicators can be employed that comprises multiple signal strength indicators, sampled over time, of a first channel of the group of frequency channels. Respective values for the composite indicator can be assigned in response to comparisons of the multiple signal strength indicators to one or more defined threshold(s). An idle time metric of the first channel can be determined based on a combination of the respective values and a best channel from among the group of frequency channels can be determined based on the idle time metric. The communication module can be updated to communicate via the best channel.
