Patent number: 11555281Abstract: A break-away coupling is formed of metal and has a central axis and a necked-down central region formed by two inverted truncated cones each having larger and smaller bases. The cones are joined at the smaller bases by a narrowed transition region having an exterior surface formed by a curved surface of revolution having an inflection point of minimum diameter substantially midway of the coupling along the axis. The cones each define an angle ?1 and ?2, respectively, at each of the larger bases, wherein both ?1 and ?2 are selected to be within the range of 20°-40° and, preferably within the range of 30°-37°.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2015Date of Patent: January 17, 2023Assignee: TRANSPO INDUSTRIES, INC.Inventors: Arthur M. Dinitz, Michael S. Stenko, Mahmoud Reda Taha

Patent number: 6056471Abstract: In a break-away coupling for a highway and road side appurtenance, a controlled breaking region is provided which has at least two axial spaced necked-down portions co-axially arranged between the axial ends of the coupling which are configured to be attached both to the appurtenance, at one end, and to the support base, at the other end. Each necked-down portion essentially consists of two axially aligned conical portions inverted one in relation to the other and generally joined at their apices to form a generally hour-glass configuration having a region of minimal cross section at an inflection point having a gradually curved annular concave surface defining a radius of curvature. Each of the two necked-down portion has different radii of curvature that at respective inflection points to provide preferred failure modes as a function of the position and direction of impact of a force on the appurtenance.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1998Date of Patent: May 2, 2000Assignee: Transpo Industries, Inc.Inventor: Arthur Dinitz

Patent number: 5474408Abstract: A break-way coupling with spaced weakened sections includes a central controlled breaking region and rigid threaded bolts at each end for connection to a base at one end and to a pole or the like at the other end. The controlled breaking region includes two axially spaced necked-down portions of smaller diameter and solid cross-section. Where the axil length of the controlled breaking region is L and the necked-down portions have a diameter D, the dimensions D and L are selected so that the ratio D/L is within the range D/L.ltoreq.0.3. The necked-down portions have conical tapered surfaces to insure that at least one of the necked-down portions break upon bending prior to contact between any surfaces forming or defining the necked-down portions.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1993Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Assignee: Transpo Industries, Inc.Inventors: Arthur M. Patent number: 4826228Abstract: A universal safety device includes, in one embodiment, a cross bar frame and, in another embodiment, a flat platform. Cables extend through the frame or platform, with gripping brackets at the lower ends of the cables configurated and dimensioned to secure lower gripping surfaces of an item to be lifted or moved, such as the lips or lifting rims, or lower recesses or indentations typically provided of sand-filled inertial barriers or crash cushions. Locking members are provided for maintaining the brackets in engagement with the lower gripping surfaces of the items to be lifted and a girth cable or belt is placed around the item to be lifted which circumscribes the downwardly depending cables to prevent accidental release thereof during lifting or movement.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1987Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: Transpo Industries, Inc.Inventors: Arthur M. Dinitz, Shepard C. Ozeroff

Patent number: 4772155Abstract: A safety roadway delineator includes one or more elongate recessed marker surfaces which are coated with a reflective material, preferably a retroreflective material such as reflective glass beads. The recessed marker surfaces are vertical or at least inclined to the horizontal to insure water run-off and are formed either directly in cast-in-place concrete roadway members or in pre-cast polymer concrete facing panels which are attached to the cast-in-place concrete roadway members. The roadway delineator is substantially continuously protected from normal wear and reliably exhibits reflectivity both under dry and rainy weather conditions.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1987Date of Patent: September 20, 1988Assignee: Transpo Industries, Inc.Inventor: Arthur M.
