  • Patent number: 11879689
Abstract: A pump assisted heat pipe may combine the low mass flow rate required of latent heat pipe transfer loops with a hermetically sealed pump to overcome the typical heat pipe capillary limit. This may result in a device with substantially higher heat transfer capacity over conventional pumped single-phase loops, heat pipes, loop heat pipes, and capillary pumped loops with very modest power requirements to operate. Further, one or more embodiments overcome the gravitation limitations in the conventional heat pipe configuration, e.g., when the heat addition zone is above the heat rejection zone, the capillary forces are required to transfer the liquid from the heat rejection zone to the heat addition zone against gravity.

  • Patent number: 11859579
Abstract: A system for multiple burns from a solid fuel rocket motor may extinguish rocket fuel after the rocket has been ignited. The motor may be extinguished via rapid decompression of the combustion chamber. The fuel may then be reignited by a suitable igniter, and the process of extinguishing and reigniting may be repeated, enabling multi-burn maneuvers. A decompressive extinguishing plug nozzle may extinguish solid rocket fuel after the rocket has been ignited and/or keep a rocket in a disarmed (zero thrust) state until the rocket is to be armed. The nozzle may include a plug that mostly impedes the opening of the nozzle and an outer cowl that is movable to rapidly decompress the combustion chamber. This rapid decompression extinguishes the solid rocket fuel. In some aspects, the fuel can be reignited and extinguished multiple times.

  • Patent number: 11859018
Abstract: The present disclosure provides peptoid-based chelating ligands, corresponding cyclic peptoids, and methods of making thereof. Functional groups may be tailored for high metal binding affinity and selectivity. The side chains of a cyclic peptoid according to the present disclosure may be selected based on, for example, high affinity for actinide or other metal ions, selectivity for actinide or other metal ions, the ability to recover a metal once it is bound to the peptoid, and whether the overall peptoid should be hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Unlike siderophores, peptoid-based chelating ligands of the present disclosure are not readily hydrolyzed under physiological conditions. Therefore, peptoid-based chelating ligands may be, for example, used to treat actinide (e.g., iron and lead) poisoning in vivo. Moreover, peptoid-based chelating ligands of the present disclosure may be used for medical imaging, chelation therapy, drug delivery, and separation technologies, for example.

  • Patent number: 11852764
Abstract: A seismic switch (SS) that is able to detect and signal when internal faults have occurred within the SS is described. The SS provides safety class functionality to the detection of seismic activity. For example, the SS may detect earthquakes above a specified level, resulting in the disconnection of electrical power to a radioactive waste storage facility, which could result in the ignition of waste materials should the storage facility and/or storage container fail during a seismic event. By reducing the risk of fire under these circumstances, the possibility of offsite releases is significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 11809518
Abstract: Global fluence estimators may be calculated on accelerators and processors for neutron and photon Monte Carlo transport. Monte Carlo random walk simulation may be performed on the processors and the calculation of a Volumetric-Ray-Casting (VRC) estimator may be offloaded to the accelerators. The VRC estimator may modify an expected-value estimator to extend a pseudo-particle ray along the direction of the emitted particle from source and collision event through not only the event volume, but also through all volumes that describe the problem geometry. Additionally, many pseudo-particle rays may be sampled per event, rather than just a single pseudo-particle ray per event, in order to provide more complete angular coverage.

  • Patent number: 11802045
Abstract: High temperature moderators for nuclear reactors and processes for their production are disclosed. The moderators include at least one hydrided metal and/or hydride metal allow, such as yttrium hydride, thorium hydride, yttrium-cerium hydride, yttrium-gadolinium hydride, yttrium calcium hydride, cerium hydride, etc. Such metal hydrides and/or hydride alloys may have high thermal stability, a relatively low thermal neutron absorption cross section, the ability to retain hydrogen over a large temperature range, and have good mechanical properties. Such moderators may induce spectral shift in reactors which, in turn, magnifies the Doppler reactivity temperature coefficient. Such moderators to thermalize neutrons may also enhance fuel utilization and cost-effectiveness of the reactor while keeping the core portable.

  • Patent number: 11786597
Abstract: The compositions and methods described herein are topically applied to the skin with negligible or no skin irritation and can direct or prevent transport through the skin. The compositions contain neat ionic liquids, optionally in combination with a drug to be delivered. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions increase transdermal transport of the drug to be delivered. In some embodiments, the compositions disrupt bacterial biofilms. This is particularly beneficial in the treatment of antibiotic resistant skin infections. In other embodiments, the compositions direct delivery within the skin. In still other embodiments, the compositions prevent transfer of substances through the stratum corneum. The disclosed compositions and methods can be tuned and modified such that they can be used to treat or prevent a variety of different diseases and disorders.

  • Patent number: 11748657
Abstract: Machine-learning methods and apparatus are provided to solve blind source separation problems with an unknown number of sources and having a signal propagation model with features such as wave-like propagation, medium-dependent velocity, attenuation, diffusion, and/or advection, between sources and sensors. In exemplary embodiments, multiple trials of non-negative matrix factorization are performed for a fixed number of sources, with selection criteria applied to determine successful trials. A semi-supervised clustering procedure is applied to trial results, and the clustering results are evaluated for robustness using measures for reconstruction quality and cluster separation. The number of sources is determined by comparing these measures for different trial numbers of sources. Source locations and parameters of the signal propagation model can also be determined.
