Patent number: 10457405Abstract: A heated composite structure and a method for forming a heated composite structure. The structure includes carbon fibers embedded within a thermoplastic matrix. The carbon fibers are connected with first and second electrodes that are configured to be connected with an electric source such that applying current to the electrodes causes current to flow through the embedded carbon fibers to provide resistive heating sufficient to heat the composite structure to impede formation of ice on the composite structure.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2019Date of Patent: October 29, 2019Assignee: TRIUMPH AEROSTRUCTURES, LLC.Inventors: Kyle B. Hardman, Mark A. Calder, Ian C. Derx

Patent number: 10449749Abstract: A composite wingbox structure formed of reinforced thermoplastic. The composite includes carbon fiber reinforcement and a plurality of insulation elements to localize the heat formed during the process of manufacturing the structure. The process of manufacturing the wingbox includes the steps of interleaving a series of insulations elements within a plurality of laminae and consolidating the insulation elements and laminae to form a laminate. The laminate is then aligned with a support structure such that the insulation elements overlie the supports structure. The laminate is then fused to the support structure using a non-contact heating process, such as inductive welding.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2019Date of Patent: October 22, 2019Assignee: TRIUMPH AEROSTRUCTURES, LLC.Inventors: Mark A. Calder, John F. Ellis, William David Dennison, Martin A. Wimmer, Earl L. Stone, III

Patent number: 9254539Abstract: A manufacturing system is provided comprising a plurality of work stations having one or more tools for processing a work item, at least one carrier for moving a work item among the plurality of work stations, and a platform for connecting the plurality of work stations. In a further embodiment, at least one of the plurality of work stations is not on a line with the other work stations and may include a lift machine for raising and/or lowering the at least one carrier and the work item. The platform also may preferably comprise at least one rotator for changing the direction of movement of the at least one carrier on the platform. The system also may preferably comprise at least one conveyer for transporting the at least one carrier to the platform.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2015Date of Patent: February 9, 2016Assignee: Triumph Aerostructures, LLCInventors: Laszlo Ferenczi, Gary Pekar
