Abstract: An apparatus and method for triaging patients according to radiation exposure operates by measuring electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of teeth. When operating in vivo, radiation induced spectra are obtained from intact teeth placed within a magnetic field and with a resonator having a loop and two capacitors formed in metal layers on a printed circuit substrate and located near teeth. The resonator is magnetically coupled to an RF measuring system. The spectra are used to determine radiation dose of a subject. The characteristics of the method and the apparatus make it feasible to utilize the system to measure radiation dose using previously untrained operators working in the field under emergency conditions.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides DNA-based storage system demonstrated through experimental and theoretical verification that such a platform can easily be implemented in practice using portable, nanopore-based sequencers. The gist of the approach is to design an integrated pipeline that encodes data to avoid synthesis and sequencing errors, enables random access through addressing, and leverages efficient portable nanopore sequencing via new anchored iterative alignment and insertion/deletion error-correcting codes. The embodiments herein represent the only known random access DNA-based data storage system that uses error-prone portable, nanopore-based sequencers and produces low-error readouts with the highest reported information rate and density.

Abstract: A nerve guidance conduit includes one or more guidance channels formed as porous polymeric structures. The guidance channels are within an outer tubular structure that includes randomly-oriented nanofibers. The guidance channels may have electrospun nanofibers on their inner and outer surfaces in a parallel alignment with the guidance channels. Such aligned nanofibers may also be present on the inner surface of the outer tubular structure. The outer surfaces of the guidance channels and the inner surface of the tubular structure define additional guidance channels. Such a nerve guidance conduit provides augmented surface areas for providing directional guidance and enhancing peripheral nerve regeneration. The structure also has the mechanical and nutrient transport requirements required over long regeneration periods.

Abstract: Described herein is an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) vector controller for control of a permanent magnet (PM) motor. The ADP controller is developed using the full dynamic equation of a PM motor and implemented using an artificial neural network (ANN). A feedforward control strategy is integrated with the ANN-based ADP controller to enhance the stability and transient performance of the ADP controller in both linear and over modulation regions. Simulation and hardware experiments demonstrate that the proposed ANN-based ADP controller can track large reference changes with high efficiency and reliability for PM motor operation in linear and over modulation regions.

Abstract: Solar rechargeable battery combines the advantages of photoelectrochemical devices and batteries and has emerged as an attractive alternative to artificial photosynthesis for large-scale solar energy harvesting and storage. Due to the low photovoltages by the photoelectrodes, however, most previous demonstrations of unassisted photocharge have been realized on systems with low open circuit potentials (<0.8 V). In response to this critical challenge, here the present disclosure shows that the combined photovoltages exceeding 1.4 V can be obtained using a Ta3N5 nanotube photoanode and a GaN nanowire/Si photocathode with high photocurrents (>5 mA/cm2). The photoelectrode system makes it possible to operate a 1.2 V alkaline anthraquinone/ferrocyanide redox battery with a high ideal solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 3.0% without externally applied potentials.
