Patent number: 11655128Abstract: A device includes a bevel pinion meshed to a bevel ring in rigid fixation with a pinion gear engaged with a slew ring to control rotation of the slew ring. A rotation sensor provides an electrical output corresponding to a rotational position of an input gear of the rotation sensor. A reduction gearing system interposes the bevel ring and the input gear of the rotation sensor. The gearing reduction system provides a reduction ratio enabling the rotation sensor to determine rotational position of the slew ring.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2018Date of Patent: May 23, 2023Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: Darren Scott Barnes, David M. Berezowski, Michael J. Martell, Haroon A. Khan

Patent number: 11254547Abstract: A system includes a hoist drive mechanism that elevates and lowers a load hook from a boom and a detector that provides obstacle location and identification information. A processor receives the obstacle location and identification information from the detector and provides obstacle avoidance data in response thereto.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2018Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: Shane Strahl, Tony Jones

Patent number: 10435950Abstract: A rotary table drive with a top plate and a bottom plate cooperating to define a bore and an adjacent sealed gear housing. A bushing adapter passes through the bore and is configured to receive a bushing to mate with a segment of polygonal drill pipe allowing rotational motion to be imparted thereto. The device includes a ring bearing having an inner ring affixed rigidly to the bushing adapter and an outer ring rigidly affixed to the bottom plate, and a drive gear within the sealed gear housing mated to the bushing adapter such that the bushing adapter is rotated in response to rotation of the drive gear. The bearing is sealed against exposure to the elements by being surrounded on all sides by a combination of the top plate, bottom plate, and bushing adapter.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2016Date of Patent: October 8, 2019Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: Kirk Williams, Shane Strahl

Patent number: 10078923Abstract: A cable drum receives a length of working cable that is wound in and out from the drum in response to powered rotation of the drum with an uppermost layer of working cable on the drum forming a working surface. A torque sensor in communication with the cable drum measures a torque applied to the cable drum due to tension on the working cable from a load. A drum height gauge is provided for measuring a height of the working surface of the cable on the cable drum. A processor receives the torque value from the torque sensor and the height of the working surface from the drum height gauge and computes a force applied to the length of working cable due to the load based on the torque and height of the working surface. The work performed by the cable may be calculated to assist in determining cable health.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2015Date of Patent: September 18, 2018Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: Eric Justin Sallee, David Lloyd McCarthy, Shannon Jones, Darren Scott Barnes, Ian Christopher Hall, Robert Jay Shallow, John W. Hassell, Donald James McKay, Stephen Matthew Pollard

Patent number: 7219879Abstract: An apparatus for signaling rotation of a winch in which a rotating gear internal in the winch turns an optical disc with alternating segments of distinguishing features. The disc is then in turn read by an optical sensor that can generate a pulsed output signal based on the travel of the alternating segments on the disc. The output signal of the optical sensor is then conditioned to drive a solenoid that is placed in a control lever of the winch. The optical disc and the optical sensor are part of a self-contained unit which can be inserted internally into the winch housing.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2004Date of Patent: May 22, 2007Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: David C Jackson, Ike Baldwin, Garry Knight, Simon Worboys

Patent number: 7097155Abstract: A method and apparatus for indicating when only a given minimum preset number of winding layers are present on a drum of a winch. An optical sensor system is included in a space in a hollow housing to count the number of revolutions of the drum and the direction of rotation to produce an alarm signal when only the minimum number of winding layers remains on the drum.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2004Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: Tulsa Winch, Inc.Inventors: David C Jackson, Ike Baldwin, Garry Knight, Simon Worboys
