  • Patent number: 5403257
Abstract: A multi-pull exercise device comprising a stationary frame, an extensible resistance element carried by the frame, at least two flexible pull lines attached to respective ends of the resistance element; and pulleys guiding the free ends of the pull lines to desired locations of use on the exercise device. To achieve a simple and versatile exercise device, each end of the resistance element is movable axially with respect to the other and with respect to the frame. • Patent number: 5180348
Abstract: A resistance mechanism, especially for exercise devices. The resistance mechanism comprises operating structure by which the user loads the resistance mechanism; a part rotating with the movement created by the operating structure; and a counterpart positioned at a distance from the rotating part, one of said parts being provided with magnets to create eddy currents resisting the movement of the operating structure. To achieve a mechanism suitable for exercise devices of different types, the counterpart comprises an element acting on the rotating part, said element being arranged to be rotated at a speed independent of the speed of rotation of the rotating part produced by the operating structure.

  • Patent number: 5031901
Abstract: An exercise device is described in which a flywheel fitted in a frame structure and rotated by a rider is provided with a brake mechanism for selectively braking the rotation of the flywheel, as desired. The brake mechanism comprises a copper strap fitted on the periphery of the flywheel and permanent magnet pieces attached to an arch pivotably mounted to the frame structure. The position of the arch is adjustable so that the distance of the magnet pieces from the copper strap varies in a predetermined manner to achieve a desired braking effect. To achieve a simple and clear display a two-arm lever is pivotably attached to the frame structure, the shorter arm of which being arranged to make contact with the arch and to follow the movements thereof. The end of the longer arm of the lever is arranged such that, when moved in response to movement of the shorter arm, acts as a basis for a display indicating the braking effect of the flywheel.

  • Patent number: 4953415
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for converting reciprocating motion into even rotational motion. The arrangement comprises a frame (1), a flywheel (2), a pull member (3) attached to the flywheel by means of a free gear mechanism (4), and a brake band arranged to resist the rotational motion of the flywheel (2). In order to achieve smooth operation without jerks, the arrangement comprises a relief member (7) connected to the frame by means of a lever mechanism (4). When the pull member (3) is pulled (A), it presses the relief member (7) and turns the lever mechanism so that the brake band is tightened against the flywheel. When the free gear mechanism (4) draws the pull member in direction (B), the lever mechanism (9) is arranged to turn so that it reduces the tightening force exerted by the brake band on the peripheral face of the flywheel. (FIG. 1).

  • Patent number: 4867440
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for an exercise device. The arrangement comprises a bogie provided with running rolls for supporting a seat on a rail part. The edges of the rail part are provided with flanges so that the running rolls have room enough between the flanges. The lower flanges are thereby arranged to act as rolling surfaces for the runnng rolls when the bogie is positioned on the rail part. In order that the seat would move reliably on the rail part, a counter roll is provided on both sides of the bogie between the running rolls. The lower edge of the counter roll is arranged to be positioned at a distance from the rolling surface when the running rolls are supported on the rolling surfaces. The upper flanges are provided with counter surfaces which are supported only on the upper surfaces of the counter rolls when the running rolls rise off the rolling surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4688790
Abstract: The invention relates to a torque metering device for a bicycle-type ergometer, in which ergometer the braking force is steplessly adjustable and in which the rotational movement is compensated by means of a flywheel. The rotational movement of the flywheel is braked by means of a brake mechanism (6, 7) which is pressed against the flywheel and moves limitedly therewith, whereby the movement of the brake mechanism with the flywheel is restricted by means of a spring balance connected to the brake mechanism and the frame structure of the ergometer. The spring force of the spring balance (9) counteracting the movement of the brake mechanism can be read on a scale (10) of the spring balance, which scale is positioned in the frame structure of the ergometer. In order to provide a reliable and easily readable metering device, the device is so constructed that it comprises a gear rack (12) stationarily fixed with respect to the frame structure.

  • Patent number: 4679816
Abstract: The invention relates to a wheelchair which comprises a body portion (1), back wheels (2) and front wheels (3). The wheels (2,3) are fastened to the body portion (1). The body portion (1) comprises side supports (4), upper supports (5) and lower supports (6), and a seat portion (7) is positioned between the side supports (4), a back (8) in connection with the upper supports, and a foot support (9) in connection with the lower supports (6). The back wheels of the wheelchair are detachable and the body portion is foldable when the wheelchair is changed from the using position to the transporting position. The side supports (4) are formed by two elongated members: an upper and a lower part (41) and (42) respectively which extend roughly horizontally in the transporting position, and a front and a back part (43) and (44) respectively which interconnect said horizontal parts and are shorter than said horizontal parts.

  • Patent number: 4671396
Abstract: The invention relates to a one-way clutch structure for a stationary exercise cycle, which structure comprises a flywheel journalled on an axle and a cog wheel for the transmission of the force created by treadling to said flywheel. Said one-way clutch structure allows, depending on the treadling velocity, the free rotation of the flywheel with respect to the cog wheel. In order to provide a one-way clutch structure of low manufacturing costs, the cog wheel is journaled on a first cylindrical surface formed in the center of the flywheel by means of a bushing member of plastic material. The coupling element is formed by a spring acting as a spring clutch known per se, which spring is fitted around the bushing member and a second cylindrical surface formed in the center, whereby the end of said spring which is on the side of the cog wheel is bent and locked in an opening provided on the cog wheel.
