Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide an apparatus for measuring active fluorescence in liquid samples by using solid-state components. The use of solid-state devices dramatically lowers the cost, size, and power consumption of active fluorescence while improving the ruggedness and reliability. The smaller size of the solid-state devices allows them to be placed very close to the sample. This maximizes the amount of light the sample receives from the light sources and allows efficient collection of the resulting emitted light using simple and low cost optical components.
Abstract: A submersible fluorometer for measuring a fluorescence of a photosynthetic material in a liquid, the fluorometer includes a set of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for supplying light to direct towards the liquid and a photodiode for measuring a detected light emitted from the liquid. The light is used for measuring the fluorescence of the photosynthetic material in the liquid. The fluorometer also has a water-tight volume for protecting the photodiode from the liquid.

Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide an improved spectrometer that measures light emissions and/or reflection from a non-solid material that flows through a system of pipes. This spectrometer is designed to fit into a standard pipe system. The material flows past a distal end of the spectrometer that is inserted in the pipe system. The spectrometer has the ability to project light onto the material and collect a resulting light from the material through the distal end as the material flows past this end.

Abstract: A sample reading apparatus and method. The apparatus includes a detection system for reading samples, a sample carrier support for holding a sample carrier in position for reading by the detection system, and a mask configured to expose selected portions of the sample carrier while covering other portions of the sample carrier such that the detection system reads the exposed portions of the sample carrier. At least one of the sample carrier and mask are movable to expose different portions of the sample carrier while covering other portions of the sample carrier.
