    Abstract: Primary wire for marine or undersea cable comprises a conducting core (10), typically a multifilament core of copper, and an insulating sheath comprising an insulating inner layer (12) having a thickness of 0.35 to 1.0 mm, preferably 0.5 to 0.75 mm, and an outer protective layer (14) of polyvinylidene fluoride having a thickness of 0.15 to 0.3 mm, at least the outer layer being radiation crosslinked. The inner and outer layers are preferably crosslinked together using electron beam radiation. The combination of the inner and outer layers of the sheath enables marine and subsea cables and the like to be made with smaller diameters, without loss of capacity or electrical properties and with an increase in overall performance such as temperature range and mechanical properties.

    Abstract: An assembly for permitting “Power-over-Ethernet” (PoE) connection between a PoE control device and the components of a cabling network includes a patch panel or conventional design. The patch panel includes on a front face thereof a plurality of first sockets that are each open on the front face such that a plug inserted into the first socket is connectable to a data cable via a data transmission path forming part of the patch panel. The assembly includes a distribution matrix that is securable onto the front side of the patch panel, the distribution matrix including a plurality of through-going apertures corresponding in number and location to the first sockets of the patch panel such that when the matrix member is secured on the patch panel a said aperture is functionally in register with each of the first sockets. The distribution matrix includes a power bus supported thereby. The assembly includes one or more connector devices, and the power bus is connectable to a PoE controller.

    Abstract: A thin, lightweight insulated wire comprises a core (10) with an insulating polymeric sheath comprising an inner layer (12) of polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) to empower electrical insulation, a middle layer (14) of an aromatic and/or heterocyclic ring-containing polymer such as polyetheretherketone(PEEK) to provide enhanced mechanical properties such as abrasion and cut-through resistance and an outer layer (16) of PTFE which provides electrical and chemical resistance and allows the whole construction to be sintered. The middle layer may undergo some flow and alloying during sintering, which may provide additional and unexpected benefits. The preferred thickness of each film is 25 to 50 ?m. The use of such thin films allows for a compact, thin and lightweight insulation to be produced.

    Abstract: A cable joint includes at least two cables each having inner conducting elements. At least one of the cables has a layer of paper insulation impregnated with an oil. The inner conducting elements of the cables are secured to each other at a junction. A sealing tape has an inner layer and an outer layer. The sealing tape is wrapped about the junction such that the inner layer is in contact with the cables. The inner layer is provided with a deformable oil barrier including a sealing mastic that is resistant to chemical attack from the oil and resistant to migration of the oil there through. The outer layer carries the inner layer. The outer layer is provided with a substantially rigid tape that is resistant to deformation and expansion of the inner layer that forms a protective sleeve about the inner layer.
