  • Patent number: 5680029
Abstract: Apparatus for recharging a battery, comprising a compartment which holds the battery so that its electrical terminals are in contact with a pair of electrodes. The electrodes are connectable to the poles of a controllable source of electrical energy. In the compartment a ferromagnetic body is positioned so as to be subjected to mechanical stress in response to mechanical deformation of the battery. An electrical device monitors the magnetic permeability .mu. of the ferromagnetic body by measuring the self-inductance of a coil surrounding at least a portion of the ferromagnetic body. The .mu. of the ferromagnetic body changes by magnetostrictive effects arising from mechanical stress of the ferromagnetic body in response to mechanical deformation of the battery (5) during charging. Expansion of the battery can be used as an indicator that charging has been completed, and that the battery should be disconnected from the source of electrical energy.

  • Patent number: 5679893
Abstract: A method of determining the corrected oil decline for an oil-producing reservoir is provided. The values of a plurality of variables are determined including the total processing rate for the reservoir at an initial time denoting the beginning of an elapsed production time period, the total processing rate for the reservoir at a first selected time after the initial time, the oil processing rate for the reservoir at the initial time, the cumulative quantity of total fluids produced from the reservoir between the initial time and the first selected time, the oil processing rate for a given oil saturation level of the reservoir at the first selected time, and the ratio of non-oil fluids to oil for all fluids produced from the reservoir at the first selected time. The values of these variables are then employed in a system of equations to calculate the corrected oil processing rate at the first selected time.

  • Patent number: 5676879
Abstract: A molecularly oriented synthetic resin composition whose coefficient of linear thermal expansion in two mutually perpendicular directions, below the glass-transition temperature, is at least a factor of 3 smaller than in a third direction extending perpendicularly to the first two directions, is manufactured by curing a liquid-crystalline composition having a helicoidal order of molecules, so as to form a polymer network. The resins thus obtained are suitable for use as claddings on materials having a coefficient of thermal expansion which is smaller than that of most synthetic resins.

  • Patent number: 5676238
Abstract: A lumber piece conveyor including a conveyor chain having retaining lugs and overhead rollers for pressing the lumber pieces on to the retaining lugs. The overhead rollers independently descend and retract as the logs approach the rollers in sequence. The retracted position of each roller is established by the prior roller's position of initial engagement with a log. The retracted position can thus be established at a substantially consistent distance above the point of engagement regardless of the log diameter. Preferably a linkage has one end that is connected to the roller movement of a prior roller assembly and the other end dictates the pivotal positioning of a proximity switch. As the prior roller is moved into engagement, the linkage pivots the proximity switch. The proximity switch signals a computer that the subsequent roller is too high or too low and the roller is accordingly lowered or raised to the desired retracted position.

  • Patent number: 5677903
Abstract: An optical information storage system has a multi-recording layer record carrier and a scanner device for the carrier. The scanner produces a radiation beam which is compensated for spherical aberration for a single height of the scanning spot with the stack of layers. The height of the stack is determined by the maximum spherical aberration permissible for the system. The number of layers in the stack is determined by the minimum distance between layers, which depends on the crosstalk in the error signals due to currently unscanned layers.

  • Patent number: 5677629
Abstract: The apparatus including a mainly cylindrical RF coil (9) having a central axis (33) which extends in its longitudinal direction, which coil has a number of axial conductor elements (35) which extend parallel to the central axis across a mainly cylindrical surface, and end conductor elements (37) which extend around the central axis near the ends of the axial conductor elements. The axial conductor elements (35) extend pair-wise diametrically relative to the central axis and the RF coil (9) is arranged to generate a substantially cosinusoidal current distribution as a function of the position of the axial conductor elements on the circumference of the cylinder in order to enable generation and/or reception of a substantially uniform RF magnetic field which is oriented perpendicularly to the cylinder axis. Each of the end conductor elements (37) consists of a number of loop conductor segments (39) which corresponds to the number of pairs of axial conductor elements (35).

  • Patent number: 5677627
Abstract: A magnetic resonance (MR) multislice method, in which in each cycle nuclear magnetization is successively excited in a respective group of measuring slices which are situated at a distance from one another and the MR signals generated under the influence of at least one gradient magnetic field are acquired, is such that the groups of measuring slices excited in different cycles exhibit a spatial offset relative to one another which is smaller than the distance between the measuring slices excited in a cycle and the gradient magnetic fields are varied from one cycle to another. The nuclear magnetization distribution in a reconstruction slice is reconstructed from the MR signals acquired in the various cycles and originating from measuring slices which neighbour one another in space and are situated to both sides of the reconstruction slice.

  • Patent number: 5677589
Abstract: The capped high-pressure discharge lamp has a discharge vessel having opposite neck-shaped portions. A tubular glass sleeve envelopes the discharge vessel and has constrictions coupling the sleeve to a respective neck-shaped portion. The sleeve has an end-portion adjacent a constriction at the side thereof which is remote from the other constriction, in which end portion a pinch is present. A clamping member having lugs which hold the pinch is secured to a mounting member which is fixed to a cap. The pinch provides for a mechanically strong portion to secure the discharge vessel to the cap. The construction is able to withstand heavy shocks which may occur during transport.
