Abstract: Stabilized layered lithium metal oxide cathode materials are described which include excess lithium, Ni, Mn, and at least one other metal ion. The materials comprise a layered LiMO2-type material in which M comprises a combination of Ni, Mn, and at least one other metal ion that includes less than about 6 mol % Co; and which has about 1 to 6 percent excess lithium. In one embodiment, the stabilized lithium metal oxide cathode material comprises a composition having the empirical formula xLi2MnO3·(1?x)LiNi0.5+?/2Mn0.5??Co?/2O2, wherein 0<x?0.1; and 0???0.2. In another embodiment, the stabilized lithium metal oxide cathode material comprises a composition having the empirical formula Li1+3y[NiaMnbM?c]1?yO2, wherein M? is one of more metal selected from the group consisting of Co, Al, Fe, Mg, and Ti; 0<y?0.02; 0.85?a?0.96; 0.03?b?0.1; and 0.01?c?0.1.

Abstract: A method for obtaining 225AC from 225Ra having the steps of assembling a column having an inorganic stationary phase; priming the column to immobilize 226Ra 225Ra and natural decay products therefrom; immobilizing the 226Ra, 225Ra, 224Ra, and natural decay products therefrom onto a stationary phase within the column; and eluting the column containing the 225Ra with an aqueous sulfate solution to obtain a milking effluent that contains 225AC. Also provided is a method for obtaining pure 225AC from its isotope parents, the method comprising assembling a column having a stationary phase comprising an inorganic material; priming the column with the isotope parents to immobilize 225Ac, and natural decay products of 225AC; immobilizing the 225Ac, and natural decay products therefrom onto the stationary phase within the column 226Ra, 225Ra, 224Ra; and eluting the column containing the 225AC to obtain an effluent that contains the isotope parents.

Abstract: ALD and p-CVD methods to generate MgB2 and MgB2-containing films in the growth temperature range of 250-300° C. The thermal ALD and p-CVD methods shown herein ensure that the high-temperature-induced roughening, which causes high surface resistances in MgB2 coatings grown by the mentioned conventional techniques, is avoided. The MgB2 and MgB2-containing films exhibit superconductive properties at above 20° K.

Abstract: A method for recovering a lithium electrolyte salt from spent batteries comprises first extracting electrolyte from shredded batteries (e.g., spent batteries at the end of their useful lifetime) with an organic carbonate solvent; concentrating the extracted electrolyte in vacuo to form a solid lithium electrolyte salt that is solvated with the organic carbonate; and then extracting solvent from the solvated, solid lithium electrolyte salt with supercritical CO2 to purify the lithium electrolyte salt sufficiently for reuse in lithium batteries. In the first extraction, the organic carbonate solvent is selected based on the solubility of the lithium electrolyte salt in the solvent, as well as the volatility of the solvent to facilitate the concentration process. The supercritical CO2 is preferably held at a pressure in the range of about 1,500 to about 30,000 psi and is passed through a bed or column of the solvated salt.

Abstract: A heat transfer module can include an envelope sealed to define an internal volume that contains a working fluid and a wick disposed on an internal surface of the envelope. The wick and envelope each has a first portion extending through an evaporator region and a second portion extending through adiabatic and condenser regions. The first portion of the wick is a metal hydride. The first portion of the envelope includes a metal liner surrounding the first portion of the wick, a first diffusion barrier layer disposed between the first portion of the wick and the metal liner, and a ceramic matrix composite cladding surrounding the metal liner. The second portions of the wick and envelope each includes a refractory metal and/or stainless steel.
