    Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to provide a catalyst for exhaust gas purification, which is capable of effectively processing an exhaust gas, particularly carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) in the exhaust gas at a low temperature, and a method for producing the catalyst for exhaust gas purification. The purpose is achieved by a catalyst for exhaust gas purification, which is obtained by having a carrier that contains Al2O3 and one or more metal oxides selected from the group consisting of zirconium oxide (ZrO2), cerium oxide (CeO2), yttrium oxide (Y2O3), neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), silicon oxide (SiO2) and titanium oxide (TiO2) support one or more catalyst components selected from the group consisting of gold (Au), silver (Ag), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), ruthenium (Ru) and osmium (Os). The metal oxides have particle diameters of less than 10 nm.

Provided is a method for purification of exhaust gas from an internal-combustion engine comprised by: providing a temperature-raising catalyst for exhaust gas from an internal-combustion engine in an exhaust gas passage of the internal-combustion engine, along flow of said exhaust gas, at the upstream side of a purification catalyst for said exhaust gas; and introducing hydrocarbon in an amount of 1,000 to 40,000 ppm, as converted to methane, from the upstream side of the temperature-raising catalyst, wherein said temperature-raising catalyst has catalytically active components supported onto a refractory three-dimensional structure, wherein concentration of said components has a gradient such that said concentration gradually becomes lower from the inflow side toward the outflow side of said exhaust gas.

The oxygen storage material comprises cerium, zirconium, and iron, and content of iron in the oxygen storage material is 0.01% by mass or more and less than 0.70% by mass (Fe2O3 conversion) relative to the total mass of the oxygen storage material. And the oxygen storage material is (a) a complex oxide or a solid solution of iron and a metal comprising cerium and zirconium; or (b) an iron is supported on a complex oxide or a solid solution of a metal comprising cerium and zirconium.
