  • Patent number: 4166870
Abstract: A process of manufacturing an electrode for a zinc halogen electric cell comprising forming a first mix of 20-100 grams of 50% compressed acetylene black, 450-750 ml. water, about 5 ml. acetone, and if desired 5 ml. of 30% zinc chloride solution by mixing gently, forming a second mix of 50 ml. latex and 50-250 ml. water, adding the second mix slowly to the first mix until the resultant mix is in crumbly form, applying a layer of this crumbly mix to a sheet of expanded anodizable metal or alloy or of including a metal or metals of Group IV(A) or V(A) and pressing the layer onto the metal sheet.

  • Patent number: 4135039
Abstract: A rechargeable zinc halogen cell is disclosed, together with a carbon electrode structure, an electrode including at least two of the electrode structures, and a metal electrode, all of which may be used with the zinc halogen cell. The electrode structure has a substrate of anodizable metal of Groups IV(A) and V(A) of the Periodic Table, and this substrate has a permanent coating of porous carbon. At least two of these structures are used to make up a halogen storage electrode. The metal electrode comprises a substrate of anodizable metal of Groups IV(A) and V(A) of the Periodic Table of open mesh coated with zinc or a zinc-containing alloy or salt. The rechargeable zinc-halogen cell utilizes halogens of chlorine, iodine or bromine and may use the electrodes described above.

  • Patent number: 4129689
Abstract: A zinc chloride rechargeable cell or battery comprising a container, at least one cathode element therein comprising a substrate of a metal or mixture of metals selected from Groups IVA and VA of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleef having applied thereto with sufficient pressure to break the metal oxide film thereon and a layer of porous carbon in which chlorine gas is occluded to form a cathode element and which acts as a current collector at least one zinc bearing electrode within said container and a substantially nitrogen free zinc chloride electrolyte on said casing having a pH value of not less than 1.0.

  • Patent number: 4107397
Abstract: A rechargeable zinc halogen cell or battery comprising a casing defining one or more electrode compartments, a number of halogen storage carbon/metal cathodes mounted in each compartment and interspaced with one or more zinc bearing anodes, a halogen gas inlet to the casing and communicating with an open portion of each cathode to form a common channel for the gas in the cell, and disposed between each cathode and anode a semi-permeable separator which will not allow any substantial passage therethrough of the halogen in liquid form.
