  • Patent number: 4705200
Abstract: This powder actuated tool is designed to fire high power loads, such as 32 caliber blanks, to drive a member into a concrete surface. The tool has a housing and a reciprocating barrel mounted on the housing. The firing mechanism is contained in a breech block which is reciprocable in the housing. The cartridge chamber is disposed in the breech end of the barrel in a member which is freely slidably removable from the barrel in a breechward direction. The member is provided with empty external gas sealing grooves which prevent substantial breechward movement of the cartridge chamber member when the tool is fired. There is no mechanical lock between the breech block and the breech end of the barrel. Reciprocal movement of the barrel is controlled by guide lugs on the muzzle end of the housing and mating guide slots formed in the exterior of the barrel.

  • Patent number: 4651912
Abstract: The tool has a reciprocating barrel mounted in a housing and includes a ram mounted in the barrel for driving a fastener into a work surface. The firing mechanism has a firing pin and a firing pin driver which the operator strikes with a hammer to fire a cartridge chambered in the tool. The firing pin driver is biased to a retracted safe position when the tool is not cocked so as to prevent drop fire. A detent pawl is mounted on the ram to provide frictional retention forces for the ram and barrel. The pawl cooperates with a resilient stop mounted on the housing to return the ram from a driven position to a driving position when the barrel is reciprocated in the housing, and the pawl also engages a breechward stop formed in the housing which prevents the ram from contacting a chambered cartridge when the tool is in a breech-closed, ready-to-fire condition. Bellville washer stacks are used to position the firing mechanism. An improved hand grip is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4598851
Abstract: This improved powder-actuated fastener driving tool includes a fastener-driving piston which is slidably housed in a reciprocating barrel. The barrel is contained in a housing member. The tool includes a movable firing pin slidably disposed in a movable breech member. A firing pin pawl is retained in a slot in the breech member to hold the firing pin in a cocked position. The firing pin is held in place in the breech member by a removable C ring disposed in a groove in the firing pin spring guide. Auxiliary gas-venting passages are disposed in the housing tool barrel adjacent a piston pawl return slot formed in the barrel. The tool includes a tapered muzzle bushing which reduces the possibility of air-firing the tool. The inner or breech end of the muzzle bushing is spaced from the muzzle end of the barrel to minimize the possibility of deformation of the muzzle bushing due to piston overdrive.

  • Patent number: 4565312
Abstract: The tool is used for explosively driving fasteners or the like into supporting surfaces, such as masonry. It is designed for the do-it-yourself user and includes a safety which requires that both hands be used to fire the tool. The tool is of the type which includes a barrel which is reciprocally slidably mounted on a housing and must be pressed breechwardly to cock the firing assembly for firing. A barrel blocking member is mounted on the housing and must be manually disabled from blocking the barrel before the latter may be caused to cock the firing mechanism. The blocking member is so located that it cannot be disabled by the same hand which grasps the tool's pistol grip and pulls the trigger when the tool is fired.
