Publication number: 20140270400Abstract: A user may check-in to an international flight and receive an electronic boarding pass using captured travel document information. If the travel document information has not been captured, the travel document information may be captured from a travel document by one of visual image capture or wireless communication. Visual image capture includes capturing an image of the travel document, performing optical character recognition (OCR) on the image of the travel document to extract text; and storing the extracted text on a computer-readable medium. Wireless communication includes receiving travel document information from a wireless communication device included in the travel document. The captured travel document information is compared to a list of registered passengers to determine if the passenger associated with the travel document is registered for the international flight. If the passenger is determined to be registered for the first international flight an electronic boarding pass is generated.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2013Publication date: September 18, 2014Applicant: UNITED AIR LINES, INC.Inventors: Michael Natale, Zhi Wang, Sripriya Punugoti, Jarod Velasquez, Ryan Austin, Mark Nasr

Patent number: 7061383Abstract: An apparatus and method for an automatic check-in using radio-frequency (RF) identification cards are disclosed. Passengers who fly frequently are issued RF identification cards, which may be detected by detectors stationed in the lobby of an airport or at a boarding gate. When a card is detected, a computer checks the identification of the passenger against a passenger list for the flight that is presently boarding. If there is a match, the passenger is automatically checked in, a signal is given, and the passenger proceeds to board the flight. The method, and the RF check-in system, may also be used for other conveyances, such as cruise ships, railroad journeys, bus trips, or other modes of mass transit.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2001Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Garry L. Patent number: 6684443Abstract: An aircraft boarding bridge has two arms, one arm for each side of the aircraft. Using the boarding bridge, passengers and crew may embark or debark both sides of the aircraft at the same time, enabling boarding or deplaning in as little as half the time presently used. This multiple-door access boarding bridge may use one or more than one door on each side of the aircraft. The bridge itself may be an apron-drive model, using drive wheels to approach a parked aircraft, or may be a fixed-location model, using vertical lifts to move into position once an aircraft has parked. Access doors in the bridge allow service personnel to approach without interfering with the boarding or deplaning processes.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2001Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Michael A. Thomas, Moshe Schechter

Patent number: 6681466Abstract: A method for easily removing portions of aircraft skin damaged by pressure cycles and corrosion. The method includes inspecting both upper and lower portions of the skin. Using a special router and guide, the damaged skin is then removed and replaced. The method is particularly useful in that it is rapid and precise, and promises control over the process sufficient to insure that aircraft structure below the skins is not damaged. The method may also be used to remove and replace sheet metal used in other applications.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2001Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Bruce R. David, William J. Rushin

Publication number: 20020166220Abstract: A method for repairing structures uses an accurate measurement of the part to be repaired and the structure into which it fits. The method allows for a digital measurement of features of the part and the structure, and eliminates tedious and inaccurate hand-measurement methods previously used. The method is primarily applicable to one-of a-kind parts requiring exact measurements, because of the unique shape that a part may assume when it is subject to stress and strain over time and many cycles of use.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 11, 2001Publication date: November 14, 2002Applicant: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Michael L. Publication number: 20020168241Abstract: An apparatus for easily removing portions of aircraft skin damaged by pressure cycles and corrosion includes a router and a guide for the router. The guide is precisely formed for a uniform height or thickness. Using this thickness, a router with a precise vertical adjustment rides on a platform above the aircraft, guided by the guide, and quickly and easily makes long horizontal cuts to remove layers of aircraft skin that contain cracks or corrosion. The apparatus may also be used for removing and replacing sheet metal used in other applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2001Publication date: November 14, 2002Applicant: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Bruce R. Patent number: 6401901Abstract: A baggage chute for transferring baggage from an elevated level of an aircraft passenger boarding bridge to ground level. The chute includes at least one slide member which is shaped to form a truncated cylinder of arcuate cross-section and which has annularly extending ribs. A plurality of mounting members are used to fasten the slide member to the boarding bridge and to support the slide member. A baggage receiving area is attached near an end of the slide near ground level for receiving and retaining baggage. The receiving area includes a flexible member extending substantially across the receiving area for stopping the sliding of the baggage and which absorbs the impact of the baggage.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1998Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Bracken, Richard Kmetz, Paul Simon, John Hughes

Patent number: 6134500Abstract: A system and method for generating a minimum-cost airline flight plan from a point of origin through a set of fix points to a destination point. A set of navigation airways from the point of origin to the destination point, including predefined fix points and vectors for high altitude flight, and a set of predetermined flight planning altitudes is stored in a database. Operational data for the flight and weather data for the flight is also stored in the database, as well as station data, station approach and departure procedures, predefined flight restricted areas, and flight performance data. The predefined fix points are transformed from the Cartesian plane onto a new coordinate system based on the great circle route between the origin and the destination. Each transformed fix point is assigned an ordinal value, and an acyclic network is constructed based on the ordinal values and within a feasible search region which excludes any flight restricted areas.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1999Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventors: Baoxing Tang, Amit Mukherjee

Patent number: 5003150Abstract: Apparatus for inert gas shielded arc welding having a plenum with an outlet covered by a gas lens. An electrode provides electric current to the part being welded. The gas lens can overlie the lip of the plenum to prevent ambient air from being drawn into the gas envelope and contaminating the weld. The plenum can be teardrop shaped, having sidewalls which converge toward the trailing end. To enable the torch to weld a circumferential surface which is confined by an overhang, the inert gas is introduced near the leading edge of the plenum by a U-shaped conduit which circumvents the overhang. The plenum is much wider than it is deep and the flow of inert gas for shielding can be turned generally perpendicular to the direction of its introduction. Finally, the inert gas introduced into the plenum can be directed at an electrode post within the plenum, and the lip introducing the inert gas into the plenum can have a trailing edge which projects further into the plenum than does its leading edge.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1990Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventor: Gary A. The rotation and lifting functions may be accomplished by motorized means. The apparatus is attachable to a floor mounted base plate and may be easily removed and secured to another base plate.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1983Date of Patent: February 25, 1986Assignee: United Air Lines, Inc.Inventor: Frank A.
