Patent number: 11938221Abstract: Novel, nanoparticle-based vaccines are provided that elicit an immune response to a broad range of infectious agents, such as influenza viruses. The nanoparticles comprise a heterogeneous population of fusion proteins, each comprising a monomeric subunit of a self-assembly protein, such as ferritin, joined to one or more immunogenic portions of a protein from an infectious agent, such as influenza virus. The fusion proteins self-assemble to form nanoparticles that display a heterogeneous population of immunogenic portions on their surface. When administered to an individual, such nanoparticles elicit an immune response to different strains, types, subtypes and species with in the same taxonomic family. Thus, such nanoparticles can be used to vaccinate an individual against infection by different Types, subtypes and/or strains of infectious agents.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2021Date of Patent: March 26, 2024Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary, Department of Health and Human ServicesInventors: Barney S. Publication number: 20240094425Abstract: A detector for detecting optically undetectable sub-cm orbital debris. A ring detector comprising a current pulse transformer (CPT) in which a conducting wire coil is wrapped around a loop of high permeability material having a magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) core. Debris objects in low earth orbit become charged as they pass through local plasma. As each charged debris object passes through the coil-wrapped loop, its current generates an induced voltage pulse, which can be used to detect the presence of the debris object. By fielding such a detector on a satellite, a long duration survey of the debris distribution in the LEO region can be made as the satellite's altitude is systematically varied.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2023Publication date: March 21, 2024Applicant: The Government of the United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: William E. Patent number: 11932389Abstract: The present disclosure defines a morphing airfoil having a dynamic flexible skin system that is capable of carrying high level aerodynamic (or fluid) pressure loads over a structural surface. The structural surface can morph and deflect in response to control inputs to change a lift force without separate movable control surfaces. The anisotropic skin is attached to underlying structure that is both actively controlled and passively supported. A control system causes the underlying support structure to move to a desired location which in turn causes the skin to bend and/or flex without exceeding a stress threshold and thus vary the lift profile along a span of the airfoil.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2020Date of Patent: March 19, 2024Assignee: United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Jared Neely, James Joo
