Patent number: 6534770Abstract: A radiation detection apparatus includes a scintillation counter, a download control device for outputting a scintillation count to a utilization device, and a hand-held probe including a scintillation detector. The apparatus also includes a connector for connecting the probe to the counter, and a switch assembly removably mounted to the probe. The switch assembly has a first trigger for causing the counter to accumulate a first scintillation count over a first period, the counter to accumulate a second scintillation count over a second period, and the detection apparatus to display the second scintillation count. The switch assembly has a second trigger for causing, upon activation, the download control device to manifest an accumulated scintillation count from the counter. A lack of activation of the second trigger during the display of the second scintillation count causes the counter to resume accumulating scintillation counts over the first period.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2001Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Assignee: United States Surgical CorporationInventors: Eric Miller, Richard Scott Rader, Timothy N. Patent number: 6492508Abstract: Incorporation of certain amino acid analogs into polypeptides produced by cells which do not ordinarily provide polypeptides containing such amino acid analogs is accomplished by subjecting the cells to growth media containing such amino acid analogs. The degree of incorporation can be regulated by adjusting the concentration of amino acid analogs in the media and/or by adjusting osmolality of the media. Such incorporation allows the chemical and physical characteristics of polypeptides to be altered and studied. In addition, nucleic acid and corresponding proteins including a domain from a physiologically active peptide and a domain from an extracellular matrix protein which is capable of providing a self-aggregate are provided. Human extracellular matrix proteins capable of providing a self-aggregate collagen are provided which are produced by prokaryotic cells. Preferred codon usage is employed to produce extracellular matrix proteins in prokaryotics.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1998Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: United States Surgical Corp. a division of Tyco Healthcare GroupInventors: Elliott A. Patent number: 6488636Abstract: An apparatus and method for the biopsy of tissue specimens and, more particularly, a single insertion multiple sample percutaneous biopsy apparatus and method are provided. A tip at a distal end of a vacuum support tube is introduced into a tissue mass. The vacuum support tube is retracted exposing a basket tube bounded by a front washer and a rear washer mounted thereabout forming a tissue basket. The basket tube is supported internally by a thrust tube which provides structure to the apparatus to allow it to penetrate tissue. The thrust tube and the basket tube are in fluid connection and are provided with suction to draw tissue inward. The tissue is then severed by rotating and advancing a knife edge at the distal end of the vacuum support tube. The tissue basket is withdrawn and the tissue sample is removed by rotating the vacuum support tube. The tissue sample is sliced longitudinally, and a stripper scrapes the tissue sample from an opening in the vacuum support tube.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2001Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: United States Surgical CorporationInventors: Graham W.
