Publication number: 20140285676Abstract: The present invention relates to a high precision method, model and apparatus for calibrating, determining the rotation of the lens scope around its symmetry axis, updating the projection model accordingly, and correcting the image radial distortion in real-time using parallel processing for best image quality. The solution provided herein relies on a complete geometric calibration of optical devices, such as cameras commonly used in medicine and in industry in general, and subsequent rendering of perspective correct image in real-time. The calibration consists on the determination of the parameters of a suitable mapping function that assigns each pixel to the 3D direction of the corresponding incident light.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 25, 2012Publication date: September 25, 2014Applicant: UNIVERSIDADE DE COIMBRAInventors: João Pedro de Almeida Barreto, Gabriel Falcão Paiva Fernandes, Rui Jorge Melo Teixeira

Publication number: 20140004042Abstract: The present invention provides a system presenting site-specific accumulation through a ligand that specifically targets a receptor overexpressed on the surface of specific cells within a target organ, like, for example, tumor cells and/or vascular cells of tumor blood vessels. Moreover, this invention provides a method where, upon internalization of the previous-mentioned system by the target cells, triggered release at a high rate of the associated agent takes place, permitting efficient intracellular delivery and, thus, increased concentration of the transported cargo at the target site. Overall, this invention provides a method for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human diseases and disorders.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 6, 2013Publication date: January 2, 2014Applicants: Centro de Neurociencias e Biologia Celular, Universidade de CoimbraInventors: João Nuno Sereno de Almeida Moreira, Vera Lúcia Dantas Nunes Caldeira de Moura, Sergio Paulo de Magalhães Simões, Maria de Conceição Monteiro Pedroso de Lima

Publication number: 20100143484Abstract: The invention provides a novel submicron system for the oral administration of proteins. An effective oral carrier for proteins should shield its content against the gastrointestinal tract proteases and be capable of facilitating the uptake of the protein drug across the gastrointestinal epithelium. The present invention relates to production of gelled particles which comprises a protein drug susceptible to enzymatic degradation by enzymes and acid conditions in the stomach, a polymeric matrix which undergoes precipitation-swelling process, and two-layer-coating materials which are themselves capable of enhancing absorption of said drug across the intestinal mucosal tissues and of inbihiting degradation of said drug by gastric enzymes. Insulin-loaded particles with appropriate submicron size for gastrointestinal absorption were made of natural occurring polymers by emulsification-based method and proved to be gastric pH and protease protective.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 24, 2007Publication date: June 10, 2010Applicant: UNIVERSIDADE DE COIMBRAInventors: Ana Catarina Beco Pinto Reis, Franscisco Jose Baptista Veiga, Antonio Jose Rebeiro, Ronald James Neufeld, Christiane Damge

Patent number: 7319998Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for supporting serendipity and pseudo-serendipity. A collection of profiles are generated to model the user's worldview. A collection of shadow profiles are generated to model divergent knowledge based on the user's profiles and external information or knowledge sources. A collection of items are retrieved from the profiles and used to perform a deliberate search for laterality. The initial and lateral items are merged into a search string. The search string is used to perform a search or wandering process that is aware of potential serendipitous stimuli in an information space. The discovered, unexpected, unsought, unforeseen stimuli are intended to be subsequently presented to the user.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2004Date of Patent: January 15, 2008Assignee: Universidade de CoimbraInventors: José Manuel Marum Campos, António Costa Dias De Figueiredo
