Abstract: An integrated-optics MEMS-actuated beam-steering system is disclosed, wherein the beam-steering system includes a lens and a programmable vertical coupler array having a switching network and an array of vertical couplers, where the switching network can energize of the vertical couplers such that it efficiently emits the light into free-space. The lens collimates the light received from the energized vertical coupler and directs the output beam along a propagation direction determined by the position of the energized vertical coupler within the vertical-coupler array. In some embodiments, the vertical coupler is configured to correct an aberration of the lens. In some embodiments, more than one vertical coupler can be energized to enable steering of multiple output beams. In some embodiments, the switching network is non-blocking.

Abstract: Wave energy conversion (WEC) systems and methods for harvesting wave energy by use of the systems are described. WEC systems incorporate a plurality of submerged oscillating water columns (SOWC) that encourage oscillating water motion within each submerged column to mimic the motion of waves passing the SOWC system. A WEC system includes multiple SOWC connected to one another via air pockets within each submerged column. Each SOWC includes a float connected to a power take-off. The oscillations of the floats are converted to useful energy by the power take-off of the system.
Abstract: A method for detecting whether glucose metabolism is abnormal comprises: detecting GPx2 gene expression, GPx2 protein expression or the activity of GPx2 protein in a test body, and making comparisons with GPx2 expression amount of a normal individual, when the GPx2 expression of the individual is significantly lower than that of the normal individual, indicating that the carbohydrate metabolism of the individual is in an abnormal state. Applications of GPx2 in the preparation of a medical composition for the treatment and prevention of type II diabetes.
Abstract: A method of sand consolidation is provided. The method includes injecting a consolidating fluid into a subterranean sand formation via a wellbore to saturate a portion of the subterranean sand formation in a target region surrounding the wellbore and displace a formation fluid present in the subterranean sand formation. Herein, the consolidating fluid comprises bitumen dissolved in an aromatic solvent. The method further includes injecting a composition comprising one or more heat-generating chemicals into the subterranean sand formation such that the portion of the subterranean sand formation in the target region is heated to a target temperature of at least 150° C. The method further includes injecting a gas comprising oxygen into the subterranean sand formation for a period sufficient to oxidize the bitumen in the target region into a residue present on sand grains to bind the sand grains together into a consolidated permeable matrix.

Abstract: The increasing power density and, therefore, current consumption of high performance integrated circuits (ICs) results in increased challenges in the design of a reliable and efficient on-chip power delivery network. In particular, meeting the stringent on-chip impedance of the IC requires circuit and system techniques to mitigate high frequency noise that results due to resonance between the package inductance and the onchip capacitance. In this paper, a novel circuit technique is proposed to suppress high frequency noise through the use of a hyperabrupt junction tuning varactor diode as a decoupling capacitor for noise critical functional blocks. With the proposed circuit technique, the voltage droops and overshoots on the onchip power distribution network are suppressed by up to 60% as compared to MIM or deep trench decoupling capacitors of the same capacitance.

Abstract: A controller performs a first process of scanning a cylindrical irradiation region including a focused spot of laser light emitted from a laser light emitter to machine a flank face side of a workpiece to manufacture a cutting tool having a plurality of cutting edges arranged in line. In the first process, the controller scans the cylindrical irradiation region along a scanning path that has periodicity and changes a machining depth to form the plurality of cutting edges. The controller further performs a second process of scanning the cylindrical irradiation region including the focused spot of the laser light emitted in a direction different from an irradiation direction of the laser light in the first process to machine a rake face side of the workpiece.

Abstract: Provided are a series of crocins compounds and related pharmacological applications thereof in prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The series of crocins compounds are obtained by taking the Chinese herb, namely Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, as a raw material and separating same by means of various methods. The compounds playing a role in preventing oxidative injury caused by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and excitatory amino acid injury caused by L-glutamic acid are screened out by in-vitro cell experiments. The results show that the crocins compounds have good effect in preventing cell injury caused by H2O2 and L-glutamic acid. The compounds have good effect in preventing and treating Alzheimer's disease due to the fact that significant rise of oxidative stress and excitatory amino acid is a key factor for nerve injury in Alzheimer's disease, and have broad development and application prospect.
