Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying an object having a pattern of plasmon resonant particles (PREs) distributed in or on the object are disclosed. In the method, a field containing the pattern is illuminated, and one or more spectral emission characteristics of the light-scattering particles in the field are detected. From this data, an image of positions and spectral characteristic values in the field is constructed, allowing PREs with a selected spectral signature to be discriminated from other light-scattering entities, to provide information about the field. The image may be compared to a database of reference images to identify or validate the object.

Abstract: Novel methods of native chemical ligation are provided. The methods involve reacting a thioacid (e.g. a peptide thioacid) with an aziridinyl compound (e.g. an aziridinyl peptide) or glycosylamine under mild conditions without the use of protecting groups, and without requiring that a cysteine residue be present in the ligation product. Initial coupling of the thioacid and the aziridinyl compound yields a ligation product containing an aziridinyl ring. Optional subsequent opening of the aziridinyl ring (e.g. via a nucleophilic attack) produces a linearized and modified ligation product. Coupling of a peptide thioacid and glycosylamine yields a glycosylated peptide.

Abstract: A polymer or polymer composite membrane having through-thickness micropores and a method of preparing the same are provided. More particularly, a polymer or polymer composite membrane having a pore structure such that micropores are aligned in a mesh structure in the thickness direction of the polymer or polymer composite membrane due to unidirectional freezing in the thickness direction of a solvent. The membrane has through-thickness micropores, and thus has improved permeability in the thickness direction and superior uniformity in size of the micropores and wall thickness between the micropores. For these reasons, the membrane can be used for a porous membrane substrate, microfiltration membrane, etc.

Abstract: CEST imaging technique and MR scanning are used as an MRI method for measuring glutaminase mediated tumors. The method takes advantage of the fact that glutamine does not exhibit a significant Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) effect while glutamate does. In accordance with this method, one first obtains a glutamate CEST MRI map of the area of a tumor. L-glutamine (nontoxic up to several millimolar level) or glutaminase blocker is then injected and a post injection Glutamate CEST map is obtained. The difference in the spatial maps indicates the level of expression of glutaminase in the tumor.

Abstract: Frequent monitoring of early-stage burns is necessary for deciding optimal treatment and management. Superficial-partial thickness and deep-partial thickness burns, while visually similar, differ dramatically in terms of clinical treatment and are known to progress in severity over time. The disclosed method uses spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) far noninvasively mapping quantitative changes in chromophore and optical properties that may be an indicative of burn wound severity. A controlled protocol of graded burn severity is developed and applied to 17 rats. SFDI data is acquired at multiple near-infrared wavelengths over a course of 3 h. Burn severity is verified using hematoxylin and eosin histology. Changes in water concentration (edema), deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration, and optical scattering (tissue denaturation) are statistically significant measures, which are used to differentiate superficial partial-thickness burns from deep-partial thickness burns.
