Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of growing thin film diamond. Since there are micro-grooves formed between internal grains of the heterogeneous substrate during lateral epitaxy growth, diamond seeds are allowed to be embedded in the micro-grooves; surface damage caused by scratching method or seeding method also can be prevented. As a result, a continuous diamond thin film with uniform thickness and high quality can be obtained.
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is a scalable single stage differential power converter. The inverter can be implemented in signal, split and multi-phases. A multiphase converter can be achieved with only three modules. Integrated magnetics used in preferred embodiments of the invention mitigate the DC component of the steady-state dynamics and can be extended to AC ripple mitigation. Control architectures in preferred embodiments can mitigate higher order harmonics in steady state dynamics. Embodiments of the invention also provide scalability for voltage and current source topologies.

Abstract: Novel methods of native chemical ligation are provided. The methods involve reacting a thioacid (e.g. a peptide thioacid) with an aziridinyl compound (e.g. an aziridinyl peptide) or glycosylamine under mild conditions without the use of protecting groups, and without requiring that a cysteine residue be present in the ligation product. Initial coupling of the thioacid and the aziridinyl compound yields a ligation product containing an aziridinyl ring. Optional subsequent opening of the aziridinyl ring (e.g. via a nucleophilic attack) produces a linearized and modified ligation product. Coupling of a peptide thioacid and glycosylamine yields a glycosylated peptide.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a non-invasive blood glucose sensor, comprising: a substrate, a first metal layer, a second metal layer, and a blood glucose sensing unit, wherein the first metal layer is formed on the one surface of the substrate and has a microstrip antenna in the internal thereof, the second metal layer is formed on the other surface of the substrate, and the blood glucose sensing unit is electrically connected to the first metal layer and the second metal layer. In the present invention, the non-invasive blood glucose sensor can be used to measure a numerical value of the blood glucose in a human body by way of disposing the non-invasive blood glucose sensor near the human body, without using any body-invading ways, for example, the acupuncture treatment; therefore the inconveniences and incorrect measurements resulting from the body-invading ways can be avoided.

Abstract: Powder catalysts that comprise particles of chemical compounds of Au and Cu deposited on acid-washed carbon-based supports are effective catalysts in ethyne hydrochlorination to produce vinyl chloride monomers (VCMs). They give a high selectivity and productivity of VCM and decreased amounts of the byproducts of chloroethane, dichloroethane and others. Thiocyanates are used as complexing agents to extend the catalyst lifetime. The activity of the catalyst is enhanced by doping nitrogen atoms into the support.

Abstract: A polymer or polymer composite membrane having through-thickness micropores and a method of preparing the same are provided. More particularly, a polymer or polymer composite membrane having a pore structure such that micropores are aligned in a mesh structure in the thickness direction of the polymer or polymer composite membrane due to unidirectional freezing in the thickness direction of a solvent. The membrane has through-thickness micropores, and thus has improved permeability in the thickness direction and superior uniformity in size of the micropores and wall thickness between the micropores. For these reasons, the membrane can be used for a porous membrane substrate, microfiltration membrane, etc.

Abstract: A helmet apparatus for automated vehicle heading alert includes a carrier detachable from headwear of a driver, a plurality of light emitting elements, a gyroscopic device, a signal processing and decision-making (SPDM) processor, and a power device. The light emitting elements are installed on the carrier and include left and right light emitting elements. The gyroscopic device is installed on the carrier and includes a gyroscope for detecting an operation of a vehicle and outputting gyroscope signals corresponding to the operation. The SPDM processor receives the gyroscope signals to form operation signals, processes the operation signals, performs a discriminant decision-making procedure, generates consecutively discriminant signals corresponding to the operation signals, and drives accordingly at least one of the light emitting elements to turn on, turn off, or flashing.

Abstract: Several QTLs that are genetically linked to resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) are disclosed. These QTLs have been mapped to genomic regions on Chrs. 4, 8, 10, 11, 18, and 20 of soybean, G. max. Candidate genes underlying these QTLs as defined by the flanking markers, as well as genetic markers associated with these QTLs are also disclosed. These markers can be utilized for introgressing SCN resistance into non-resistant soybean germplasm. The unique resistance genes can be introduced into a non-resistant plant by marker-assisted selection (MAS) or by transgenic methods.

Abstract: An MRI system acquires a susceptibility-weighted image by acquiring a first RF echo signal in a first echo time for providing an image exclusive of susceptibility-weighting and acquiring a second RF echo signal in a second echo time longer than the first echo time for providing an image including susceptibility-weighting. A compensation gradient field is applied for compensating for field inhomogeneity and in response, a third RF echo signal is acquired in a third echo time longer than the second echo time. First, second and third images are generated in response to data derived from the first, second and third RF echo signals respectively and data of the first, second and third images is combined to provide image data representing an image compensating for magnetic resonance signal attenuation in the second image.
