Abstract: A semiconductor device includes a metal column that extends in a stretching direction; a polymer layer that surrounds the metal column from a direction crossing the stretching direction; and a guide that surrounds the polymer layer in the crossing direction so as to be spaced from the metal column with the polymer layer interposed therebetween. A method for manufacturing semiconductor devices includes a step of filling a mixture containing metal particles and polymers in a guide; and a step of subjecting the mixture to a heat treatment so that the polymers agglomerate to the guide to form a polymer layer that makes contact with the guide and the metal particles agglomerate away from the guide with the polymer layer interposed therebetween to form a metal column that stretches in a stretching direction of the guide from the metal particles.

Abstract: A naturally occurring or recombinant protein, especially a mutein of porcine urate oxidase (uricase), that is essentially free of large aggregates can be rendered substantially non-immunogenic by conjugation with a sufficiently small number of strands of polymer such that the bioactivity of the protein is essentially retained in the conjugate. Such conjugates are unusually well suited for treatment of chronic conditions because they are less likely to induce the formation of antibodies and/or accelerated clearance than are similar conjugates prepared from protein preparations containing traces of large aggregates.

Abstract: A novel silver-lithium-iodine solid-state energy device and system are disclosed. The rechargeable, self-assembled, dual-function, metal-iodide battery exhibits small size and high deliverable power. Inert until activation, the device may be stored for long periods of time. Upon activation, the device assembles the required electrochemical moieties for operation without external intervention. The device limits short-circuiting and self-discharge of the system by spontaneous reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, and thus is self-healing. By incorporating both silver and lithium in the same system, a dual function is achieved, whereby the characteristics of a lithium-based battery dominate at a low load and those of a silver-based battery dominate under a high load.
