    Abstract: A method and system for cancelling body movement effect for non-contact vital sign detection is described. The method begins with sending on a first electromagnetic wave transceiver a first electromagnetic signal with a first frequency to a first side of a body, such as a person or animal. Simultaneously using a second electromagnetic wave transceiver a second electromagnetic signal is sent with a second frequency to a second side of a body, wherein the first frequency and the second frequency are different frequencies. A first reflected electromagnetic signal reflected back in response to the first electromagnetic wave on the first transceiver is received and a first baseband complex signal is extracted. Likewise a second reflected electromagnetic signal reflected back in response to the second electromagnetic wave on the second transceiver is received and a second baseband complex signal is extracted.

    Abstract: Compositions comprising nanoparticles (e.g., nanocrystals) of stishovite silica are described. Such nanoparticles may be made by (1) subjecting a mesoporous silica starting material (e.g., SBA-16 or KIT-6) to a pressure of less than about 20 GPa (e.g., about 12 GPa); (2) heating the mesoporous silica starting material while under pressure to an elevated temperature of less than about 1000° C. (e.g., a temperature of between about 300° C. and about 400° C.); and thereafter isolating the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles may be used in a work tool that is configured and adapted for cutting, drilling, abrading, polishing, machining, or grinding, among other uses.

    Abstract: A semiconductor laser that includes an active region, claddings and electrical contacts to stimulate emissions from the active region, where a coupled waveguide guides emission. The waveguide includes a broad area straight coupling region that fans out into an array of narrower Individual curved coupled waveguides at an output facet of the laser. The individual curved coupled waveguides are curved according to Lorentzian functions that define the waveguide curvature as a function of position along the device. The integral length of each individual curved coupled waveguide differs from adjacent individual curved coupled waveguides by an odd number of half- wavelengths. The coupled waveguide array shapes the optical field output of the semiconductor laser such that a large fraction of the power is emitted into a small angular distribution using interference phenomena. A laser of the invention produces high power output with a very high quality, narrow beam shape.

    Abstract: In certain aspects, the preproghrelin gene, but not the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) is required for normal integration of thermoregulation and sleep in mice. A catalyst layer including at least one catalyst block is formed on the substrate. A thickness of the at least one catalyst block is gradually decreased from one end to another opposite end thereof. At least one carbon nanotube array extending from the catalyst layer using a chemical vapor deposition process is formed. The at least one carbon nanotube array is arc-shaped, and bend in a direction of deviating from the region.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a method of creating an LDPC code that is defined by a parity-check matrix H. The parity-check matrix H is derived from a (0,1)-geometry which is induced by a finite inversive space. This inversive space has an order q where every circle in the inversive space contains exactly q+1 points, q is preferably even, and most preferably equal to 2. Where the inversive space has a dimension n. Where the (0,1)-geometry is formed as a derived geometric structure based on pencils of degree m?n in the inversive space. The method includes construction of a binary K by N matrix H labelled by K circles and N pencils of the inversive space, wherein the (i, j)-entry of the matrix is 1 if circle i belongs to pencil j, and 0 otherwise. If the degree of the pencil is given by 2 then the parity-check matrix H needs to be transposed, i.e. HT is used instead of H. A method of transmitting a message, a coder, a decoder and a data transmission system using such codes are also disclosed.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for computing out of plane motion between two ultrasound images. The method identifies regions of fully developed speckle that are common to the two images, computes a correlation coefficient corresponding to the two fully developed speckle image regions, and then computing an elevation distance corresponding to the correlation coefficient. The method exploits the measurable and characterizable relation between inter-image correlation and elevation distance, which may be determined from fully developed speckle regions. The method also identifies regions within the ultrasound images related to structure (e.g., vein or bone), and disregards these regions.

    Abstract: The invention relates to wireless biotelemetry of low level bioelectric and biosensor signals by means of directly modulating the backscatter of a resonant circuit. Low level electrical analog or digital signals are directly applied to a resonant circuit containing a voltage-variable capacitor such as a varactor diode, that proportionally shifts the resonant frequency and so amplitude of radiofrequency backscatter in a way that represents analog bioelectric or biosensor waveform data. By strongly driving the resonant circuit with a radiofrequency source, a voltage variable capacitance can be caused to amplify the bio-signal level by a parametric process and so provide sufficient sensitivity to telemeter for low millivolt and microvolt level signals without additional amplification. A feature of the device is its simplicity and that it accomplishes both modulation and preamplification of low level sensor signals by the same variable capacitance circuit which reduces the device size and power consumption.
