  • Patent number: 7563234
Abstract: A method of rehabilitating a patient suffering partial or total loss of motor control of an appendicular joint caused by injury or neurological disorder but exhibiting clinically plegic (i.e., paralyzed) muscles and retaining minimal ability to weakly contract the muscles develops overt movement at a joint and ultimately leads to improved functionality. The method entails use of feedback in which the patient views and/or hears a signal related to the intensity of electromyographic (EMG) activity the patient produces in the appropriate muscles while attempting to move the paretic or plegic joint. The method is intended as an alternative form of feedback for highly disabled patients while they receive therapy using an Assisted Movement with Enhanced Sensation (AMES) device providing joint torque feedback.

  • Patent number: 7563580
Abstract: A nucleic acid adsorbent in which a polymer having a constitutional unit represented by the following formula (I) is immobilized on a water-insoluble carrier is used as a nucleic acid adsorbent capable of selectively and efficiently adsorbing nucleic acids from complex mixtures, such as cell extract, wherein R1 represents hydrogen, fluoride, or methyl; R2 and R3 each independently represent alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; A is —NH— or —O—; and B represents alkylene of 2 to 18 carbon atoms. Nucleic acids are recovered from cell extract by allowing them to be adsorbed to the nucleic acid adsorbent by mixing this nucleic acid adsorbent with cell extract, removing the nucleic acids from the cell extract by separating the adsorbent therefrom, and dissociating the nucleic acids from the nucleic acid adsorbent by treating the separated nucleic acid adsorbent with alkali.

  • Patent number: 7563572
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and kit for determining the molecular haplotype of a gene in a diploid DNA sample. The method discriminates between two haplotypes on the basis of a difference of one or more nucleotides using allele-specific PCR amplification in combination with long range PCR, using a DNA polymerase enzyme having 3??5? exonuclease activity, using annealing temperature conditions sufficiently greater than the predicted annealing temperature (Tm) to effect selective hybridization and extension of an allele-specific extension primer to the target allele relative to the variant allele. The present invention is particularly useful, for example, to determine the haplotype of a gene having multi-allelic genetic loci separated by a distance in which accurate PCR amplification of a single fragment containing the multiple genetic loci cannot be performed without using a DNA polymerase enzyme having 3??5? exonuclease activity, generally about 5 kilobases or more.

  • Patent number: 7563586
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of identifying a modulator of a voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC), which method comprises bringing into contact a VGSC, a p11 peptide and a test compound under conditions where the VGSC and the p11 peptide are capable of forming a complex in the absence of the test compound; and measuring an activity of the VGSC, wherein a change in the activity of the VGSC relative to the activity in the absence of the test compound indicates that the test compound is a modulator of said VGSC. Compounds identified in such screening methods are proposed for use in the treatment of VGSC-related conditions, for example in the treatment or prevention of pain. Also provided are methods of enhancing the functional expression of a voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC) in a cell comprising the step of increasing the level of p11 in the cell.
