Publication number: 20110021327Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for assembling fixed-weight dumbbells and barbells. The apparatus and method use locknuts to secure weight plates to the fixed-weight dumbbells and barbells. The locknuts are permanently (or semi-permanently) attached or affixed to opposing ends of the bars or handles of the fixed-weight dumbbells and barbells. The attaching of the locknuts to the bar or handle may be accomplished by any known permanent (or semi-permanent) fastening technique, including welding, soldering, fusing, braising, bonding, and the like. Bolts or other threaded means are then screwed through openings in the weight plates into the locknuts to secure the weight plates to the bar or handle. The locking mechanisms of the locknuts thereafter prevent the bolts or other threaded means from loosening and backing out over time, even under severe shock and vibration conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 22, 2009Publication date: January 27, 2011Applicant: USA SPORTS, INC.Inventor: Louis Lien

Patent number: 7828702Abstract: A weight plate have integrally formed handles is provided. The weight plate has a weight plate body having an outer periphery, a first side, and a second side that is substantially flat. The weight plate also has a central bore extending through the body, a raised flange member forming a portion of the outer periphery on the first side, and at least one handle opening extending through the body and through ht least a portion of the outer periphery. The handle formed by each handle opening, the corresponding recess, and the raised flange member is sufficient for a human hand to grip.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2004Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Assignee: USA Sports, Inc.Inventors: Louis Lien, Katy Phan

Patent number: 7704196Abstract: An improved weight plate includes a planar body having a central opening for receiving a barbell or dumbbell bar therethrough. The weight plate includes oppositely facing flange members extending partially about the perimeter of the weight plate. The opposed ends of the flange members are spaced from each other and define a gap therebetween. The flange members extend perpendicularly from both sides of the weight plate planar body about the perimeter thereof. The weight plate includes at least one opening formed adjacent the perimeter of the weight plate. The opening is adapted to receive one or more fingers of an average human hand for securely grasping and lifting the weight plate. Adjacent weight plates mounted on a barbell bar are adapted for interlocking engagement.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2007Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: USA Sports, Inc.Inventors: Louis Lien, Annie Wu

The handle formed by each handle opening, the corresponding recess, and the raised flange member is sufficient for a human hand to grip. In one embodiment, the weight plate further includes an interlock for interlocking the weight plate with another weight plate when positioned together. In another embodiment, the weight plate further includes a pock defined in the weight plate. The pock allows the weight of the weight plate to be adjusted to a desired weight by allowing additional material to be added to the pock.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2007Date of Patent: April 14, 2009Assignee: USA Sports, Inc.Inventor: Louis Lien
