A field programmable gate array disaggregates monitored variables monitored from each arm. Multiple digital signal processor controllers communicate with each of the each of the submodules.

The protective material includes a hybrid matrix comprising PANI and MXene dispersed within a thermosetting epoxy resin. This hybrid matrix can be painted, printed, or applied as a conductive polymeric layer to a FRCP structure, for example an aircraft fuselage, wing, empennage, control surface (aileron, flap, slats, rudder, elevator) or a wind turbine blade. The protective material not only withstands lightning strikes, but also functions as shielding against electromagnetic interference and is corrosion-resistant and lightweight.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a methane oxidation catalyst and methane oxidation catalysts formed by the method are provided. The method includes providing a palladium (Pd)-based catalyst including Pd dispersed onto a support. A magnesium (Mg) precursor is introduced to the Pd-based catalyst by one of ion exchange or incipient wetness impregnation. After introducing the magnesium precursor to the Pd-based catalyst, the catalyst is dried and subjected to a final heat treatment that includes hydrothermal calcination. A method of methane oxidation in a lean exhaust environment via the methane oxidation catalyst is also provided.

    Abstract: A system for sampling a liquid includes a sample fluid conduit including a membrane having pores. The membrane prevents the passage of the sample liquid through the pores at a first pressure of the sample liquid in the sample fluid conduit. A surface sampling capture probe has a distal end. The capture probe includes a solvent supply conduit and a solvent exhaust conduit. A solvent composition flowing at the distal end of the capture probe establishes a liquid junction with the membrane and establishes a second pressure within the liquid junction at the membrane. The second pressure is lower than the first pressure. Sample liquid will be drawn through the pores of the membrane by the second pressure at the liquid junction. A method for sampling a liquid and for performing chemical analysis on a liquid are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method and system for sampling a solid sample material can include the step of mounting the sample material on a support. A sample surface is coated with a surface treatment composition in a dry deposition process. A solvent supply conduit for supplying solvent to the sample surface and a solvent exhaust conduit for withdrawing solvent from the sample surface can be provided. Solvent is flowed from the solvent supply conduit to the surface treatment composition and the sample surface such that the solvent contacts the surface treatment composition. A laser beam is directed from a laser source to the sample and the surface treatment composition. The laser beam will ablate the sample and the surface treatment composition in portions intersected by the laser beam. Ablated sample material enters the solvent liquid and will be transported with the solvent away from the sample surface through the solvent exhaust conduit.

The metal foam fins occupy a cross-flow region between adjacent conduits, the fins having a fixed angular orientation or being rotatable in unison to vary the thermal capacitance of the heat exchanger.

    Abstract: A system for measuring gas flow generally including a passive acoustic wave generator disposed in a gas flow stream to passively generate an audio signal through vortex shedding, a sound capturing instrument disposed outside the gas stream to produce an electrical signal representative of the acoustic signal, a temperature sensor to obtain temperature measurements indicative of the temperature of the gas flow stream and a control system for determining the gas flow, such as velocity or flow rate, as a function of the acquired acoustic and temperature measurements. The acoustic wave generator includes a corrugated flow channel whose geometric design is so tuned to generate an acoustic emission whose frequency signature varies as a function of the gas flow velocity. The control system may acquires time-domain acoustic data, and process that data to obtain a frequency-domain representation from which gas velocity or gas flow rate can be determined.

    Abstract: Single-stage and multi-stage systems and methods for the recovery of critical elements in substantially pure form from lithium ion batteries are provided. The systems and methods include supported membrane solvent extraction using an immobilized organic phase within the pores of permeable hollow fibers. The permeable hollow fibers are contacted by a feed solution on one side, and a strip solution on another side, to provide the simultaneous extraction and stripping of elements from dissolved lithium ion cathode materials, while rejecting other elements from the feed solution. The single- and multi-stage systems and methods can selectively recover cobalt, manganese, nickel, lithium, aluminum and other elements from spent battery cathodes and are not limited by equilibrium constraints as compared to traditional solvent extraction processes.

    Abstract: A fastener for use in joining dissimilar materials manufactured by the process of producing the fastener with an external surface that forms an electrically insulating oxide layer when subjected to oxidation and, after manufacture and prior to use, subjecting the fastener to a pre-oxidation process to grow the desired oxide layer in situ on the external surface of the fastener. The present invention also provides a dissimilar material joint in which the pre-oxidized fastener is used to mechanically join dissimilar materials with the oxide layer electrically insulating the fastener from at least one of the dissimilar materials. The fastener may be a rivet used in friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR). The fastener may be fabricated from an alloy capable of forming Al2O3 or Cr2O3 by thermal oxidation. The fastener may be pre-coated with Al or Cr that functions as a seed layer to form Al2O3 or Cr2O3.
