Patent number: 9017613Abstract: In order to disinfect and to detoxify a fluid, a photoreactor contains at least two light sources. One light source activates the catalytic function of a semiconductor material in the fluid to reduce the concentration of contaminants in the fluid, such as by breaking down organic contaminants into non-toxic compounds. A second light source acts directly on living biological entities to sterilize or kill them and thereby disinfect the fluid, and can also serve to activate a semiconductor photocatalyst that in turn causes further damage to biological contaminants. The semiconductor photocatalyst is desirably attached to an optically transmitting fiber substrate in the fluid. The second light source in one embodiment is external to the fluid and illuminates the photocatalyst through transmitting surfaces in a fluid containment vessel. The light sources can comprise respective sets of plural LEDs.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2013Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: UVCleaning Systems, Inc.Inventors: Mark D. Publication number: 20130180931Abstract: Disclosed herein are embodiments of a solar-activated photochemical fluid treatment system, some of which comprise an group of modules coupled together with attachment mechanisms, the group of modules comprising one or more floats. The modules comprise a porous substrate and a semiconductor photocatalyst coupled to the substrate. The group of interconnected modules can be configured to float at or near the surface of a body of fluid such that the fluid and sunlight can be in contact with the photocatalyst. The fluid treatment system can, responsive to solar radiation applied to the photocatalyst and to the fluid, induce photochemical modification of contaminants and living organisms in the fluid. Related methods are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2011Publication date: July 18, 2013Applicant: UVCLEANING SYSTEMS, INC.Inventor: Mark D. Owen
