  • Patent number: 5144890
Abstract: An actuator (10a, 10b) for calender rolls (3, 4) in a machine calender connected on-line to a paper machine, wherein the actuator is situated between the calender frame (9) and support arms (11), which adjust the movable calender rolls (3,4), in order to load and unload the nips (N.sub.3, N.sub.2) formed by the calender roll (3, 4) in question and its counter roll (3, 2), and to lock the calender rolls (3, 4) to the top position (3', 4'). The actuator (10a, 10b) is of modular construction and consists of a movable frame (13), which forms the frame of the actuator, and which can be connected to the vertical side (9c) of the claender girders (9) so that the vertical position of the movable frame (13) can be adjusted. The actuator module is equipped with a double acting hydraulic cylinder (12), which is connected between the movable frame (13) and the support arms ( 11) of the calender rolls (3, 4) to load and unload the calender nips and to lift the rolls (3, 4) to the top position.

  • Patent number: 5074964
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for forming fibrous paper or board web on a double wire section of a paper machine. The double wire section includes a first wire loop and a second wire loop. In a first dewatering zone of the double wire section where the paths of both wire loops are substantially linear, the web direction is adjustably deviated towards the second wire loop. In a second dewatering zone located after the first dewatering zone, the web is curved towards the first wire loop to form a curved dewatering zone. In the linear dewatering zone, the second wire loop is loaded towards the first wire loop with wire support members. In the curved dewatering zone, the compression between the wires is effected by adjustably tightening the wires.

  • Patent number: 4997524
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for cutting off and guiding a strip cut from the edge of a paper web in a threading operation. The strip is released from a cylinder by blowing and is guided by pocket blowing so as to form a bag and is then cut off. The strip is conducted through an arrangement functioning as a draw-press, which pulls the strip against a cutting member of a cutting device in such a way that it is severed and the strip can immediately be transferred further.

  • Patent number: 4988408
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for guiding the wires of a paper machine former. The former includes a double wire section including two wires (1,2) in parallel direction (R) in which on the other side of the wires (1,2) a dewatering unit (10) is arranged to drain water from the stock (3) flowing between the wires and in which at least the farthest wire (2) from the dewatering unit is compressed with foil lists (20) or equivalent support members against the wire (1) nearest to the dewatering unit (10) in cross-machine direction with respect to wire direction (R) and across the web width. The load of these foil lists (20) is achieved by separate pressurized load hose construction (21) arranged between each foil list (20) and support table or equivalent in order to achieve the desired press to the stock (3) between the wires (1,2).

  • Patent number: 4984490
Abstract: The invention is related to a method for adjusting the knife clearance in sheet cutters. In a sheet cutter, the web material is cut by means of a cutter drum (1) rotated by drive mechanism (4) and provided with cutting knives (2), and a counter knife (5) disposed in a knife support (6) and positioned at knife clearance distance from the moving cutting knives (2). In the method according to the invention, the cutting forces acting on the cutting knives of the sheet cutters, or their effect on the structure of the sheet cutter during its operation, are measured, and the information from the measurement is used as a command variable for the knife clearance. The command variable can be determined in several different ways, and according to one embodiment of the invention, it is determined by measuring the vibration level of the structure of the sheet cutter due to the cutting forces. The invention is also related to an apparatus for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 4979689
Abstract: An apparatus and method for engaging a reel spool with a Pope reel on a web winding machine. Primary forks lower a new reel spool into nip contact with the Pope reel. After being brought into nip contact, the reel spool is supported by the Pope reel and support plates mounted on the primary forks. As the primary forks continue to lower the reel spool, the contact area between the supporting plates and reel spool changes so as to maintain a substantially constant pressure between the reel spool and Pope reel. The primary forks lower and transfer the reel spool onto reel tracks. The primary forks are then repositioned to receive the next reel spool.

  • Patent number: 4934619
Abstract: A method and apparatus for on-machine winding of a web, including a Pope reeling drum (10) and a reel spool (11). The web (W) to be wound passes over the drum. An empty reel spool (11') is brought into the grip of primary arms in such a way that bearing members (25) of the reel spool (11') are supported by guiding elements located at both sides of the drum (10) in such a manner that the reel spool (11') is not engaged with the drum (10). The empty reel spool (11'), preaccelerated to winding speed, is then brought into nip contact with the rotating reel drum (10), by moving the spool into recesses (21) in the guiding plates thereby forming a nip (10) through which the web (W) passes. The web breaks off and begins to wind onto the empty reel spool (11).

  • Patent number: 4927499
Abstract: Apparatus for stabilizing a jet flow (J) discharged from a headbox slice channel (16) of a paper machine and for controlling the edge area of a paper or board web. In the flow direction (F) of the stock suspension, the slice channel (16) narrows and converges in the edge areas thereof, on both sides in cross direction of the web formed. The top wall (25) of an apron beam (24) forms the bottom wall of the slice channel (16). The slice channel (16) is defined by a planar top wall (14), which is hinge-jointed at the upstream edge of adjustment of the slice opening (15). At the level of the bottom wall (25), the slice channel (16) narrows and converges linearly from the full width (L.sub.max) of a turbulence generator (13) down to the width (L.sub.0) of the slice opening. At the level of the top wall (14) of the slice channel (16) the width of the slice channel (16) is essentially retained the same and equal to the width (L.sub.0) of the slice opening.

  • Patent number: 4923569
Abstract: The invention relates to a headbox of a paper or board making machine, particularly a hydraulic headbox, which has an inlet header section (1) with a manifold tube section (2) and an equalizing chamber (3) in the stock suspension flow route, a turbulence generator section (4) following the equalizing chamber (3), after which a tapered slice section (8) is located, through which the stock suspension is discharged onto the wire. The headbox also has an attenuation chamber (6) for pressure variations, which defines one or several air spaces (7) under the flow channel of the stock suspension, the spaces being connected with the flow channel by way of a connecting channel (5). The air space or spaces (7) are preferably confined by subjacent frame structures including a bottom wall (16) and vertical walls (18) and walls (19) defining the flow channel from below.

  • Patent number: 4749139
Abstract: A web of a paper or board manufacturing machine is severed utilizing a severing tape in a fully automatic operation. A main (Pope) cylinder and reel drum are part of a winder for the web, and have a nip therebetween, the cylinder and drum mounted for rotation about parallel axes. A severing tape is attached by adhesive tape to a cardboard card mounted by a pivotal arm on a first side of the winder, with an intermediate portion of the tape held outwardly from the arm by a tape dispenser with spring clip. On the second side of the winder a swing guide is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis perpendicular to the main cylinder, and mounts a spool of tape for rotation about an axis parallel to the main cylinder. The card is inserted in the nip when web severing is desired, tape is taken up on the reel drum, and after the tape is tensioned and severs the web the tape is cut by a pair of cutting blades mounted at the second side of the winder.
