Patent number: 5110062Abstract: In a web reeling machine such as the reeling portion of a paper machine the successful introduction of a fresh reel bar to maintain the continuity of the reeling operation is dependent upon turn-up of the web onto the rotating reel bar followed by build-up of a roll on the reel. The end of a bifurcated fiber optic cable is positioned adjacent the jaw clamps that retain the stationary end bearings of the reel bar so as to provide an indication of the occurrence of successful turn-up by detecting a persevering change in the clamp/bearing relationship due to roll growth. The other end of the bifurcated cable is connected to an light emitter and a light detector. The light emitter generates a light signal along the bifurcated fiber optic cable towards a light guide path in a jaw clamp so that the light signal passes through the light guide path.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1990Date of Patent: May 5, 1992Assignee: Valmet-Dominion Inc.Inventor: Djuro Kremar

Patent number: 5083719Abstract: A reel bar drive for use with a web winding system, such as the dry end of a paper making machine has a pair of driving wheels adapted to make driving contact with a peripheral end portion of a reel bar. The driving wheels are mounted on a pivotal platform located to one side of the winder. The platform is pivotable in an arcuate path having a component direction relative to the axis of the reel bar so as to move the driving wheels into driving relation with a peripheral end portion of the reel bar. Owing to the pivotal mounting arrangement, the position of the driving wheels are adjustable to compensate for changes in the reel bar position as it commences its web reeling operation. The reel bar drive may utilize its self weight to enhance frictional contact between the drive wheels and the reel bar. Upon withdrawal of the supporting platform, the drive wheels are displaced completely clear of the winding system.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1990Date of Patent: January 28, 1992Assignee: Valmet-Dominion, Inc.Inventor: Djuro Kremar

Patent number: 4986177Abstract: There is disclosed a load/relief apparatus for use in a calender of a papermaking machine having a force transfer member positioned between on upper fluid actuator and two lower spaced apart fluid actuators. A linking arm is releasably connected to the lower part of the transfer arm spaced between the two lower fluid actuators. The linking arm is adapted to be connected to a lifting arm for a calender roll. In operation, the upper fluid actuator exerts a generally linear downward force that is transferred by the transfer member moving downwardly against the linking arm and thereby pushing the lifting arm down. The lower fluid actuators are adapted to exert a generally upward linear force that is transferred by the transfer member moving upwardly raising the linking arm and the lifting arm. The linking arm is releasable from the transfer member to permit the linking arm to be lowered beyond the travel associated with the deflation of the lower fluid actuators during normal relief operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1989Date of Patent: January 22, 1991Assignee: Valmet-Dominion Inc.Inventors: Jiri Masek, Ralph J. Patent number: 4905925Abstract: A reel bar loading device is provided having sloping storage rails located above the driving roll. The storage rails are pivotally connected at their lower ends to second rails. The second rails have upper end portions, downwardly sloping portions and lower end portions. The second rails in a first position are in alignment with the first rails and provide a continuum of the track permitting the reel to descend the second rails into an awaiting transfer arm mechanism. The second rails are pivotal outwardly precluding movement of a reel from the first rails and allowing the transfer arm mechanism to move into a winding position. A pair of lowering arms engage the reel at the opposite ends of the reels adjacent to and inside of the second rails to control the descent of the reel over the second rails when the second rails are in their first position.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1989Date of Patent: March 6, 1990Assignee: Valmet-Dominion Inc.Inventor: Djuro Kremar

Patent number: 4842000Abstract: The fabric cleaning system for cleaning a fabric such as the wire on a paper machine includes a cleaning station through which the fabric continuously passes. In the station cleaning fluid is directed onto a surface of the fabric, contacts the fabric to remove at least some of the debris and is collected in a collecting chamber. The dirty fluid is cleaned of debris in a cleaner such as a screen and is then returned and re-used to clean the fabric. Preferably the cleaning fluid is applied to the fabric through slots with their outlet openings adjacent the fabric and formed by tapered passages that diminish in height in the direction of the travel of the fabric. Preferably the slots extend the full width of the fabric.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1988Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: Valmet-Dominion Inc.Inventor: Alexander Malashenko

Patent number: 4641569Abstract: An improved pressure actuator particularly suited to loading of rolls in the calender stack is disclosed. The actuator is formed by a pair of spaced arms interconnected by a link. A pressure absorbing locking bar is interposed between a pair of adjacent ends of the arm and a pressure actuator is interposed between the arms of the opposite side of the link. The link itself is pivoted to the frame so that movement of the link around its pivot point on the frame causes the arms to move so that one arm moves into an active position and the other into a reactive or pressure applying position and vice versa. In the reactive position, a locking member on a pressure plate that engages the locking bar locks the arm in reactive position in position so that pressure applied by the actuator between the opposite ends forces the other arm to pivot around its pivotal connection to the link, thereby applying pressure to a load in one direction.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1985Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Valmet-Dominion Inc.Inventors: Rodney M.
