Patent number: 6380737Abstract: A bypass valve allows fast and reliable sequential transfer of samples from a 96-well plate to a flow-through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe of an NMR spectrometer. The bypass valve has three ports: an inject port connected to a first input of the flow-through probe; a load port connected to a needle capable of drawing the samples from the 96-well plate; and a hold port connected to a holding loop. The syringe pump draws a sample from the 96-well plate through the needle and the bypass valve into the holding loop. The position of the bypass valve is switched, and the sample and a dose of push solvent are pushed into the flow-through probe through the bypass valve. After NMR measurements are performed on the sample, the sample is drawn into the holding loop through the bypass valve, at the same time as air is flushed through the probe. The position of the bypass valve is again switched, and the sample is pushed out through the needle.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2001Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Varian, Inc.Inventor: Andrew Myles

Patent number: 6377047Abstract: Superconducting birdcage coil with low-pass and high-pass coil configurations are formed by using strips each with an elongated sapphire substrate with a layer of a high temperature superconductor (HTS) material grown in a wavy pattern over its entire length on one of its main surfaces. A low-pass coil is formed with a pair of ring elements made of an electrically conductive metal and a plurality of such strips arranged parallel to one another and interconnecting these ring elements at junctions which are spaced peripherally along each of the rings. At each of the junctions, the ring element and the HTS layer form a capacitance. A highpass coil is formed by a plurality of such strips each with electrodes of the HTS material also grown at two end positions separated from each other on the other main surface of its sapphire substrates. These strips are arranged parallel to each other and sequentially around a central axis, each lying in a plane which includes the center axis.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2000Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: Varian, Inc.Inventors: Wai Ha Wong, Marco A. Patent number: 6369570Abstract: A birdcage-like coil with a pair of electrically conductive ring elements separated in a longitudinal direction and interconnected by three longitudinally extending electrically conductive elongated strips, two of which are diametrically oppositely disposed and the third is azimuthally at 90E from both of them, can create an RF magnetic field gradient when driven in a certain resonance mode. A similarly structured birdcage-like coil with a fourth strip to have two diametrically oppositely disposed strips can create two switchable orthogonal magnetic field gradient by switching off a selected one of the strips and driving the coil in a certain mode. A coil for generating alternative a homogeneous field and selectably one of two orthogonal gradient fields is formed by sandwiching a prior art birdcage long-pass coil with a pair of such coils and by switching on and off suitable ones of the switches in the strips.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Varian, Inc.Inventors: Wai Ha Wong, Subramaniam Sukumar

Patent number: 6366798Abstract: A radiotherapy machine beam treats a region of a subject while the region and volumes abutting the region are imaged by a magnetic resonance imaging system. The beam and an excitation coil assembly of the imaging system are arranged so the beam is not incident on the coil assembly and magnetic fields derived from the coil assembly do not interact with the beam. The excitation coil assembly includes two spaced winding segments for producing a main DC magnetic field; the segments are located on opposite sides of the region. In one embodiment, wherein the excitation coil assembly is mounted independently of movement of an axis of the beam, the winding segments have a common axis generally aligned with an axis about which the beam axis turns. A treatment couch for the subject fits within aligned central openings of the winding segments. The coil produces main magnetic field lines that extend generally in the same direction as the axis about which the beam turns.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2000Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignees: Varian, Inc., Varian Medical Systems, Inc.Inventor: Michael Curzon Green

Patent number: 6366093Abstract: A re-entrant radio-frequency (RF) TE11-mode cavity resonator allows generating a spatially homogeneous RF magnetic field for magnetic resonance (NMR, MRI) applications. The azimuthal current distribution is truly (continuously) sinusoidal. Moreover, the geometry allows tuning the cavity resonance frequency over a wide range. The resonator includes an outer cylindrical shell, and an inner re-entrant shell extending only along the ends of the outer shell. The magnetic resonance target of interest is placed in the middle region of the outer cylindrical shell. Multiple re-entrant inner shells can be used, particularly if multiple resonances are desirable. The resonator can be driven capacitively or inductively, for example by placing excitation loops in the space between the outer and inner shell. Multiple excitation loops are used to drive the resonator in quadrature. The resonance frequency of the cavity can be tuned by rotating tuning paddles placed between the inner and outer shells.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2000Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignee: Varian, Inc.Inventor: Spencer C.
