Patent number: 6858262Abstract: The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a surface-alloyed cylindrical, partly cylindrical or hollow cylindrical structural member where in the zone of incidence of the energy beam there is formed a locally bounded melting bath with a heating and melting front, a solution zone and a solidification front. At the side of the energy beam the hard material powder is deposited via a conveyor device in the direction of gravity and is supplied co-ordinated with the feed movement of the workpiece in a width which corresponds to the width of the linear focus and a layer height of 0.3-3 mm is thereby produced. The hard-material powder supplied to the workpiece surface in the heating front of the melting bath is heated by an energy beam at a wavelength of 780-940 nm and in contact with the liquefied matrix alloy the powder is immediately dissolved in the melting bath.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2001Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Assignee: VAW aluminium AGInventors: Alexander Fischer, Joachim Kahn, Franz Josef Feikus

Patent number: 6371194Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the production of core preforms for foundry in which a) a mixture of inorganic, refractory foundry sand and a water glass-based inorganic binder is produced, b) the mixture is poured into a heated core box c) the water contained in the mixture is withdrawn by a physical method and d) the core preform is taken out of the core box. The process is characterized by the fact that e) the heated core box is subjected to a depression during filling f) the temperature/dwell time is adjusted after the closing of the core box so that a dimensionally stable and good bearing shell is formed on the edge of the preform g) the preform is immediately removed after opening of the core box and, under the effect of microwaves, is subjected to a complete drying.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2001Date of Patent: April 16, 2002Assignee: VAW aluminium AGInventor: Thomas Steinhäuser

Patent number: 5933956Abstract: A light-metal strip wheel, in particular for motor vehicles, which includes a wheel disk and a rim. The wheel disk comprises two wheel-disk parts each having a ventilation hole. The ventilation holes have necks that when pressed into one another, secure together the two wheel-disk parts with the two parts separated from one another in the region surrounding the ventilation holes, while coming to rest on one another in a hub region. The space between the two wheel-disk parts in the region surrounding the ventilation holes increases the stiffness of the strip wheel so that the wheel is suitable for accommodating large loads.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1998Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignees: Mannesmann Aktiengesellschaft, VAW aluminium AGInventors: Meinhard Bonning, Ralf Duning, Uwe Gohrbandt, Gerhard Sollner

Patent number: 5816607Abstract: An airbag system includes a cylindrical housing which defines a chamber for a gas generator. The ends of the housing are closed by plugs which are friction welded to the housing. One of the plugs carries an ignition device for a gas generator in the housing. Two arms extend from the housing, and the ends of the arms remote from the housing are provided with lugs for fixing an airbag cover to the housing. The arms, or the arms and the housing, define at least one groove for anchoring an airbag underneath the airbag cover and over part of the housing. This part of the housing is provided with a number of vent apertures which permit gas to flow from the housing into the airbag.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: VAW Aluminium AGInventors: Arif Bugdaci, Michael Brodam
