Patent number: 4011970Abstract: An overcap for use on dispensing containers which cap offers resistance to attempts by a child to dispense the contents from the container is disclosed. The overcap features an actuator mounted on the container dispensing stem, an outer shell which encloses the actuator and a U-shaped communicator which movably contacts, at its bottom end, the actuator and which has a portion of each vertical leg protruding through apertures in the outer shell. Pressing downward on both of the protruding legs simultaneously will depress the actuator and cause the contents of the container to be dispensed. Application of downward pressure on only one of the protruding legs will not result in depression of the actuator but rather only partial rotation of the communicator on the top of the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1976Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Assignee: VCA CorporationInventors: William G. Crowle, Efrem M. Ostrowsky

Patent number: 4002275Abstract: A safety dispensing cap for fluid containers is disclosed. The cap features a tubular discharge member, a tubular closing member for attaining a rotating overlying removable fit on the discharge member and an internal latching assembly which is activated or deactivated by rotation of the tubular closing member about the tubular discharge member. The latching assembly comprises an inwardly extending latching lug on the tubular closing member and an outwardly extending latching lug on the tubular discharge member. In the locked position, the discharge latching lug will overlie the closing latching lug thus preventing removal of the closing member from the discharge member. Unlatching of the two members is achieved by a rotation of the closing member until the closing member latching lug is no longer underneath the discharge member closing lug. An indexing assembly can also be provided which will hold the unlocked position.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1975Date of Patent: January 11, 1977Assignee: VCA CorporationInventors: William G. Crowle, Efrem M. Ostrowsky

Patent number: 3998363Abstract: A hand-operated, spray dispenser pump assembly for use on a container having an outwardly extending bead adjacent its top opening, for example, an aerosol-type can. The pump is attached to the container by means of a special snap-on closure member. The closure member is molded from a somewhat resilient, strong, thermoplastic material and includes a top wall having an opening for the stem of the pump and a depending skirt which is provided with an inwardly facing, annular bead on its inner walls adapted to be snapped over the outwardly extending, complementary bead on the top of the container. The pump is provided with an integral annular flange adjacent its top opening, which flange is snap fitted inside the special closure member. An annular rubber gasket is provided around the periphery of the pump flange and makes a leak-proof sealing engagement with the top opening in the container when the special closure is snapped down over the top of the container.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1975Date of Patent: December 21, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventors: Steven W. Patent number: 3995765Abstract: A safety overcap for a container, for example, an aerosol container. The child-resistant overcap includes a generally circular top wall and a generally cylindrical outer skirt depending downwardly from the top wall. The wall of the outer skirt is provided with a pair of opposed, longitudinally extending slots. An inner skirt depends downwardly from the top wall within the outer skirt and has two opposed portions positioned adjacent the pair of openings in the outer skirt. The inner skirt is provided with opposed, inwardly projecting beads on the lower portion thereof which enagage an annular groove provided at the top of the container to attach the cap to the container. By gripping the exposed portions of the inner skirt through the slots with the forefinger and thumb and applying pressure thereto, the inner skirt is distorted and releases the overcap from the container.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1974Date of Patent: December 7, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventor: James E. Burke

Patent number: 3974832Abstract: An interchangeable needle assemblage for a hypodermic syringe which enables needles of varying lengths and characteristics to be readily attached to the barrel of an existing syringe or vial. Where double-ended needles are utilized, the barrel or vial has an opening with a sealing membrane disposed thereacross, adapted to be pierced by the inner end of the needle. Carried on the barrel is a locking type ferrule having a pair of internal locking shoulders located on opposite sides of a slot. A needle hub assembly is receivable in the slot, being rigidly affixed to the needle at a point intermediate the ends thereof, said assembly having finger-engageable ears to facilitate grasping of the hub, and further having shoulders cooperable with the locking shoulders on the ferrule. To install a needle on the syringe or vial, the hub is first inserted into the ferrule so that the hub shoulders by-pass the internal locking shoulders of the ferrule.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1973Date of Patent: August 17, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventor: Ralph E. Kruck

Patent number: 3968880Abstract: A "childproof" container having reproducible opening and closing characteristics is disclosed. The container is an integrally formed, one-piece, plastic container having a bottom section and an overlying top section hinged to the bottom section. A latching assembly which prevents undesirable "relock" when the container is being opened is featured. The portion of the locking assembly which is carried by the bottom section comprises an upwardly projecting latching lug which is thicker at its distal end than at its proximate end. The top section carries the other portion of the locking assembly which features a downwardly projecting latching protuberance on its top wall and an inwardly projecting latching protuberance on its front wall. The two protuberances are spaced apart so that the distance between them is less than the distal thickness of the latching lug carried by the bottom section.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1975Date of Patent: July 13, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventor: Efrem M. Ostrowsky

Patent number: 3963150Abstract: A squeeze bottle dispenser having a puff-type spray discharge characteristic. The bottle comprises a container having a flexible wall portion adapted to be squeezed in the hand of the user, a discharge nozzle, and a spring-urged check valve controlling flow to the nozzle. The valve includes a hollow valve housing with an annular valve seat, a ball-check engageable with the seat so as to seal the same, and a spring which normally biases the ball against the seat to seal the container and prevent leakage of its contents. The arrangement is such that when the container wall is squeezed, the ball-check initially prevents fluid from entering the valve housing until a predetermined pressure in the container has been attained, after which the spring yields somewhat, resulting in a sudden impulse or puff-type discharge through the nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1974Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventors: Wolf Steiman, Steven W. Beres

Patent number: 3958727Abstract: A dispenser of the hand-held type for discharging fluid under pressure, comprising a container having an open top end, and a valve assemblage which is received in the open end and secured in place by means of a crimped ferrule. The container has a circular rim surrounding the opening, together with an annular external shoulder immediately adjacent the rim. The valve assemblage includes a valve housing defining a valve chamber, a resilient valve seat which constitutes one end of the chamber, and a movable valve stem having a longitudinal opening and transverse side passage adapted to communicate with the chamber when the stem is depressed. The housing further includes an annular mounting flange which engages and rests upon the rim of the container, and a depending skirt which bears against inner wall portions of the container, all to form a leakproof seal therewith. The ferrule extends over the annular mounting flange of the valve housing and is crimped onto the external shoulder of the container.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1974Date of Patent: May 25, 1976Assignee: VCA CorporationInventor: Wolf Steiman
