  • Patent number: 4437631
Abstract: A leading edge slat of an aircraft wing is connected to the ends of two rods each of them being linked to a crank arm which, in turn, is swung over a particular angular range by means of a planetary gear being driven by a common shaft. Arcuate guide rails on the slat run in rolls which are journalled on the wing case.

  • Patent number: 4410151
Abstract: A vehicle or craft is provided for propeller propulsion with start assist by a releasable rocket engine. The craft is launched from a silo of square-shaped cross-section containing the starter motor for the propeller, whose engine is started while the craft is still in the silo. Diagonally opposed corners of the silo are provided with rails, in which run guides on rudder fins of the craft. The wings are pivoted to the fuselage for deployment whereby the wing tips do not move forward. The rocket engine is jettisoned shortly after take-off by simple disengagement. Parts of the wings and/or the rear of the fuselage may be jettisoned shortly before the craft reaches the target area.

  • Patent number: 4331410
Abstract: The tool includes a mandrel on which is seated and axially held an exchangeable milling cutter, coupled to the mandrel by a clutch drive ring for shell end mill arbors, for transmitting the torque during the milling procedure. In addition, a stop element is mounted on the mandrel, held against an axial displacement, but permitting relative rotation of the mandrel for operating the cutter, whereby particularly a thrust bearing is used between the mandrel and the stop element. The stop element is adjustable and limits the longitudinal movement of the cutter. To prevent any damage to the chamfer-area around the housing-bore hole by the cutter, the stop has to be adjusted accurate to the gauge, in reference to the cutting edge geometry of the cutter teeth, so that just a thin blade of material of the outer ring lip remains. The whole device is centered with the mandrel in the bore of the bearing or bushing which is to be removed after cutting one ring lip.

  • Patent number: 4283924
Abstract: An aircraft cabin is climatized by tapping air from the engine compressors and feeding it into the cabin through a loop which includes a compressor, a cooling turbine driving the compressor, and several cooling stages. A second loop, using preferably helium, includes a second compressor and a second turbine, the second compressor being driven by both turbines, and the cooled helium is in heat exchange with another cooling loop which runs through instrument compartments. Discharged cabin air is used to precool the compressed helium.

  • Patent number: 4254423
Abstract: An antenna mast is constructed from telescoped tubes which are extended for deployment by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure, the tubes when extended, are latched to each other internally, permitting depressurization. A set of unlatch cones becomes sequentially effective to unlatch the latches, beginning from the top to stepwise telescope the tubes into each other. Spring biased latches are mounted on an insert in the bottom of tubes; the unlatch cones, except the highest ones, extend from the bottom of the inserts.

  • Patent number: 4243922
Abstract: A manual control system for aircraft with feedback is improved in that the error signal amplifier gain varies also in response to the error signal. The gain is normally (zero error signal) quite low, well below the critical gain for high speed operation of the craft. The gain is increased with the error signal taking into account that the craft's reaction is lower at low speeds, and that error signals are usually lower at high speeds, particularly because stick command outputs are lower and craft's reaction is faster.

  • Patent number: 4235535
Abstract: The projector includes a housing with a projection path duct holding a dove prism and a mirror deflecting the path into a vertical axis. The beam in that path is intercepted by a tiltable mirror held in a rotatable disk. A transmission which includes bevel gearing, shafts and worm gears couples the tiltable mirror to a computer controlled motor for adjusting the elevation of the projection. Other transmission devices, including gears and worm gear, couple the disk to another motor to causing the projection beam to project in different horizontal directions. The projector is used to superimpose particular images upon a background image in a ship simulator.

  • Patent number: 4186237
Abstract: Construction parts are protected against lightening by a layer which releases a cloud of ionized and ionizable particles to spread the area affected by the lightening flash and to fan out the current path. The layer may include additives which swell when heated to increase the volume and density of the cloud. An electrically and thermal conductive layer or two such layers each having predominantly one of these properties is provided underneath the releasing layer.

  • Patent number: 4171786
Abstract: An aircraft engine is mounted above and spaced apart from the upper side of a wing by means of a supplemental wing being above and ahead of the main wing. Particular parameters for this mounting arrangement are given so that the jet clears the upper wing surface but accelerates the flow there above. The omission of a pylon on the wing is another drag reducing feature.

  • Patent number: 4147025
Abstract: An auxiliary gas turbine in an aircraft is driven by adding dimethyl-hydrazine to Kerosine and producing propellant gas by adding HNO.sub.3 or N.sub.2 O.sub.4 as oxidizer. Additional Kerosine is injected into the resulting gas for matching the gas constant of that gas to the gas constant of regular combustion gas which normally drives the turbine.

  • Patent number: 4143548
Abstract: A continuous wave ultrasonic wave transmitter transmits modulated waves in two opposite directions being intercepted by a forward receiver and an aft receiver. The received signals are demodulated and the relative phase is used to obtain a speed reading. The wave length of the modulator signal must be larger than the two, preferably equal transmitter-to-receiver spacings. A similar but orthogonally arranged receiver system permits acquisition of a speed vector. Different modulation frequencies are to be used for different speed ranges; all these frequencies are transmitted simultaneously and selection of the desired one is made in the processing circuit only.

  • Patent number: 4140290
Abstract: The roll control of V/STOL aircraft is augmented by deriving a controlled, transverse thrust component from the lift producing engine. This is accomplished by redirecting a jet to introduce such a component not compensated by a counteracting jet or jet component of the craft. Jets can be redirected through pivoting of bent pipe sections of gimbal-hung nozzles.

  • Patent number: 4137562
Abstract: A data acquisition system includes groups of transducers, a separate commutator for each group cyclically interrogates the transducers of the group. The resulting signal trains are separately decommutated and the data from each transducer group are stored in separate buffer systems. Each buffer system has a pair of buffers which alternate between reading and writing and a mask control selectively causes updating of the buffer content or copying from one into the other. A third buffer in each system is continuously updated. A formatting processor calls on all buffer pairs to assemble a PCM signal train in which the data from each transducer occur at least once in a cyclically repeated main frame. Buffer locations more frequently updated are called on more than once in the main frame. This processor is programmed to assemble the buffer addresses by counting up from starting addresses for a ROM that holds each buffer address once.

  • Patent number: 4077202
Abstract: A gear box is provided with three inputs mutually decoupling each other so that neither can drive the other two via the gear box but either can drive secondary power sources such as a pump and a generator. The three inputs are respectively connected to an aircraft engine shaft, a starter-air turbine and a gas turbine, whereby additionally the starter turbine is connected to drive the shaft for starting but not vice versa. The air turbine receives air from the compressor of the gas turbine or otherwise. The shaft can be disconnected from the system.
