Patent number: 8411672Abstract: For purposes of servicing emergency calls, such as 911 calls, a telephone number is associated with each edge router port used to provide IP service to a customer premise location. A telephone number is associated with the edge router port and the corresponding customer location. The telephone number and location information are stored in a database used for providing emergency calling party location information. When a switch used for routing IP calls detects a telephone call to an emergency call center it determines the edge router port from which the call was placed and the telephone number associated with the port for emergency call purposes. The call is then forwarded to the emergency call service center with the determined telephone number being supplied as the calling party number. Performing a lookup operation using the supplied telephone number the emergency service operator determines the location from which the call was placed.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2010Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: Robert T. Patent number: 8379531Abstract: A switched telephone network is arranged in a manner to enable packet voice communication between telephone terminals via multiple redundant packet switched networks. The packet switched networks may utilize different protocols, be operated by different entities, and have primary functions other than voice communication. One example of such a network may be internetworked networks, such as the Internet. One example of an alternate packet switched network may be a network whose primary function is control of a circuit switched telephone network. The common channel interoffice switching system (CCIS) of a public switched telephone network (PSTN) is a preferred example. A voice communication link may be established from telephone terminal to telephone terminal via the Internet, the quality of voice communication may be monitored, and the link may be transferred to the common channel interoffice signaling network if and when the quality of voice communication deteriorates beneath a pre-established norm.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2008Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: Robert D. Patent number: 8311199Abstract: Methods and systems for automatically providing conference calls are disclosed. In one aspect, methods and systems detect a conference call event that was previously configured by a subscriber user and identify participant users associated with the conference call event. In another aspect, when configuring a conference call event, a subscriber user may enter, select or otherwise designate conference information that the user wishes to be displayed in the caller identification fields that are sent out when a bridge dials the participant users associated with the conference call. Once identified, each participant user is contacted and a response is received from each of the users. Based on the received responses, a conference call is established between the participant users and the subscriber user.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2006Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignees: Verizon Services Corp., Verizon Data Services LLCInventors: Christopher L. Patent number: 8306997Abstract: Sources of operational problems in business transactions often show themselves in relatively small pockets of data, which are called trouble hot spots. Identifying these hot spots from internal company transaction data is generally a fundamental step in the problem's resolution, but this analysis process is greatly complicated by huge numbers of transactions and large numbers of transaction variables to analyze. A suite of practical modifications are provided to data mining techniques and logistic regressions to tailor them for finding trouble hot spots. This approach thus allows the use of efficient automated data mining tools to quickly screen large numbers of candidate variables for their ability to characterize hot spots. One application is the screening of variables which distinguish a suspected hot spot from a reference set.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2011Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventor: James Howard Drew

Patent number: 8307064Abstract: Methods and apparatus for retrieving software information, e.g., generic information such as version numbers, etc., from network elements in an automated fashion are described. A control server communicates with network elements in an automated manner at scheduled intervals. The control server establishes a communication session with a network element, e.g., a Telnet session, and retrieves software information at the scheduled intervals. The communication session may include logging into the network element, retrieving software generic information, and then logging out. Collected generic information is analyzed to detect changes. E-mail notifications of detected changes is supported. Collected information is maintained in a database which is accessible to authorized individuals via the Internet. Alarms are generated when detected changes result in software combinations known to produce errors.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2003Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventor: Francis Wayne Peer

Patent number: 8291120Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer program product are disclosed for providing a mechanism for re-routing queries in a telecommunications network. A service control point (SCP) executes an application which causes queries to be launched over a LAN or WAN to a remotely located data center. Primary and secondary data centers are defined, in which the secondary data center operates on a ‘hot-standby’ basis. Based on an automatically verifying system, the detection (or lack thereof) of a response from a primary data center and comparison of the response against an answer or response from another site indicates whether or not the SCP or SCP application should route queries to the secondary data center. Similarly, the same mechanism can be used to indicate that queries should be re-routed back to the primary data center.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2006Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: Jeffrey R. Evans, Susan M. Middleswarth, John H. Wurster

Patent number: 8266701Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for assessing cyber-based risks in an enterprise organization. A database comprising vulnerability data associated with computers in an enterprise is combined with a second database comprising data of users of computers in an enterprise, along with a third database base indicating the relationship of the users in an organization structure in the enterprise. From the synthesis of data in these separate databases, text based reports detailing aggregate computer vulnerabilities can be produced on a computer, as well as organizational charts depicting the relationship between selected individuals and their computer vulnerabilities. Using such reports, individuals charged with cyber-security can assess organizational cyber risks and allocate resources as appropriate.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2006Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: James T. Patent number: 8260327Abstract: In one of many possible embodiments, a method of locating a mobile terminal within a location area of a mobile communication network is provided. In the method, a threshold is set by calculating a sum of all location probabilities in the location area and dividing the sum by a maximum number of polling cycles allowed before the mobile terminal is located. Cells in the location area are arranged in non-ascending order according to their location probabilities. Multiple paging areas are formed one at a time by starting with a first cell not used in a previous paging area, grouping cells in order, and stopping when the total of location probabilities reaches the threshold or when no more ungrouped cells exist within the location area.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2008Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventor: Hui Liu
